Basic economy fares on United Airlines are a great way to save money if you don't mind giving up the perks of main cabin economy fares, like free seat selection, a carry-on bag and no-fee flight changes.
But what if you book a basic economy fare and later realize you should have paid more for the perks of a main cabin fare? Generally, you can pay separate fees for a few of these perks, like seat selection. You also could pay a single fee, which varies based on the flight details, to switch a basic economy ticket to regular economy.
The decision to upgrade carries more weight than it used to. As of April 2, 2026, basic economy tickets no longer earn MileagePlus miles for general members without a United co-branded credit card or Premier elite status. Switching to economy is now one of the few ways to earn miles on a flight you've already booked in basic economy. Here's how you can do it.

If you’re thinking of converting your basic economy ticket to regular economy, start by reviewing the terms of your current booking. Here’s what you get with a basic economy fare on United:
  • One personal item: Passengers flying a United basic economy fare can carry onboard one item, like a purse or laptop case, that's no bigger than 9 inches by 10 inches by 17 inches and fits under the seat in front of you.
  • No full-size carry-on for flights within the U.S.: For domestic flights, you can't bring a full-size carry-on bag on your basic economy trip unless you're a MileagePlus Premier member, a companion traveling on the same reservation with a Premier member, the primary cardmember of a qualifying United Airlines credit card, or a Star Alliance Gold member. Basic economy passengers on transatlantic and transpacific flights and on routes to South America get one carry-on bag.
  • No seat selection: You don't get to choose your seat on most routes unless you're an unaccompanied minor or have a disability that requires certain seating. The airline assigns you a seat before boarding. You can pay extra to choose your seat in advance, or you can purchase Economy Plus seating at check-in. Prices vary.
  • No group or family seating: You can't book seats together unless you purchase seat selection in advance.
  • No flight changes or refunds: Ticket changes aren't allowed, except in the case of same-day standby. If you cancel your flight within 24 hours of booking, you can get a full refund. After that, you only qualify for a partial travel credit.
  • Reduced or no MileagePlus mileage earning: General members without a United credit card or Premier status earn no miles on basic economy tickets. Premier members and eligible cardholders still earn miles, but at lower rates than they would on a standard economy fare. Basic economy tickets also don't count toward Premier Qualifying Flights for elite status.
  • Last to board: Unless you're a MileagePlus Premier member or a companion traveling on the same reservation with a Premier member, the primary cardmember of a qualifying MileagePlus credit card or a Star Alliance Gold member, basic economy fares are the last to board.

Know what you could get by adding economy benefits

If the terms of basic economy no longer work well for your trip, consider whether it would be worthwhile to pay to add United economy benefits on qualifying flights. Here are the bundled benefits you get with the United switch to economy feature.
  • No-fee changes or cancellations: Change or cancel your flight without paying an additional fee. You'll still owe any fare difference if you switch to a higher-priced flight.
  • A full-size carry-on: Bring a standard carry-on bag instead of just a personal item.
  • Complimentary seat assignment before check-in: Pick your seat at no additional charge, with the option to upgrade further to Economy Plus or a premium cabin seat.
  • Restored Premier perks: If you have Premier status, you'll regain access to perks like complimentary Economy Plus and preferred seating, complimentary Premier upgrades and the option to upgrade using PlusPoints.
  • Standard mileage earning: Once switched, your ticket earns at the same rate as any other standard economy fare. For non-elite, non-cardholder travelers, that means going from earning zero miles to earning miles on the trip. Note that the upgrade service charge itself doesn't earn Premier Qualifying Points.

How to add United economy benefits

The option to add United economy benefits, if available, will show up after you've booked your basic economy flight. You can find it on the "Trip details" page at United.com or under "Reservation details" in the United app.
Everyone on the reservation has to be upgraded together — you can't switch some passengers and leave others on basic economy. The upgrade applies to whatever is left of your trip: both directions if you haven't flown yet, or just the return flight if you're at your destination. Award tickets aren't eligible.
The exact price depends on your route, with pricing starting (per direction) at $74.50 on domestic flights and $149.50 on international routes. You won't see the price until after booking a basic economy fare.

Compare the cost of bundling vs. adding perks individually

Ask yourself which main cabin economy perks you need, then consider whether bundling them through the switch to economy feature is cheaper than buying them individually.
For example, if all you want is the chance to choose your seat, you can typically buy that separately. Log in to the United website or app and look at the seating chart for your flight to see if you're offered the option to pick your seat in the main cabin for an added fee. Remember to double the seat selection fee if it's a round trip. Compare that with the offered price for switching to main cabin economy.
It's also worth comparing the upgrade fee with the original fare difference between basic economy and standard economy. If the switch fee is significantly higher than that gap, you may be better off canceling within United's 24-hour flexible booking window (if applicable) and rebooking the standard economy fare directly.

How a United credit card changes the math

Holding a United co-branded credit card can affect whether switching makes sense in the first place. Many of the perks bundled into the switch fee are already available to cardholders on basic economy fares, including:
  • A free carry-on bag.
  • Priority boarding.
  • A free first checked bag (when you pay for the ticket with the qualifying card).
As a cardholder, you also continue to earn MileagePlus miles on basic economy tickets under the 2026 rules, though at reduced rates compared to standard economy. So if you have a United credit card, the case for switching often comes down to flexibility (the ability to change or cancel) and seat selection rather than carry-on access or mileage earning.
Not all United cards unlock the higher cardmember earn rates automatically, though. The United Gateway℠ Card and the United MileagePlus® Debit Rewards Card require $10,000 in calendar-year spending before you'll earn at the cardmember rate. Other cards, like the United℠ Explorer Card, United Quest℠ Card and United Club℠ Card, don't have that threshold.

What Premier members should know

If you have Premier status, switching to economy restores most of the elite benefits that basic economy blocks, including complimentary Economy Plus and preferred seating, complimentary Premier upgrades, and the ability to use PlusPoints for further upgrades.
Premier members who switch from basic to standard economy will also earn miles at the higher standard economy rate rather than the reduced basic economy rate. Keep in mind that the service charge for the switch doesn't earn Premier Qualifying Points.

When switching to economy makes the most sense

Upgrading from basic to United Economy is most likely to be worthwhile for travelers who:
  • Need to change or cancel a flight and want to avoid forfeiting the original ticket value.
  • Want a full-size carry-on and don't already qualify for one through Premier status, a United credit card or Star Alliance Gold status.
  • Don't have a United credit card or Premier status and want to earn MileagePlus miles on the trip.
  • Have Premier status and want to use elite perks like Economy Plus, complimentary upgrades or PlusPoints on a flight they originally booked in basic economy.
If none of those apply, and you're mainly looking at one perk, like seat selection, then buying it individually is often the cheaper option.
