Both the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard®  and Citi Strata Premier® Card can help you rack up AAdvantage miles. The former earns them directly; the latter transfers points to American Airlines at a 1:1 ratio. So which one is better for American Airlines flyers?

For earning rewards, the Citi Strata Premier® Card is the winner. Although it's not an American Airlines credit card, it can make it easier to accumulate AAdvantage miles on many purchases with its higher earning rates and the option to transfer ThankYou points to American.

Still, the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard® can help you achieve AAdvantage elite status and offers perks when flying American Airlines, including a free checked bag and preferred boarding. In 2027, the annual fee will increase, but the card will add new bonus categories and other benefits.

Why you might pick the Citi Strata Premier® Card

The Citi Strata Premier® Card is a better fit for travelers who want to earn American Airlines miles without committing all their rewards to a single airline program.

Earn more rewards

Although the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard® is an American Airlines credit card, the Citi Strata Premier® Card can be a faster way to accumulate AAdvantage miles on many purchases.

That's because Citi Strata Premier® Card holders can transfer ThankYou points to American Airlines AAdvantage — and several other loyalty programs — at a 1:1 ratio.

Currently, the Citi Strata Premier® Card offers more rewards than the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard® in every bonus category. On Jan. 24, 2027, when the benefits on the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard® change, that will change — but only in a couple of narrowly defined categories: select streaming services and eligible Rides and Rails purchases, which include taxis, rideshares, subways and trains. Unless those categories make up a significant portion of your spending, the Citi Strata Premier® Card will likely yield more points overall, even if your ultimate goal is American Airlines miles.

A $100 hotel benefit

The Citi Strata Premier® Card also offers a $100 annual hotel benefit when you book a single hotel stay of $500 or more, excluding taxes and fees, through Citi Travel. Using the full benefit can more than offset the card’s annual fee, and hotel bookings through Citi Travel earn 10 ThankYou points per dollar.

Just keep in mind that booking through Citi Travel may mean giving up hotel loyalty program benefits you would receive by booking directly. Whether the $100 hotel perk offers enough value to justify booking through Citi Travel will depend on the property, the rates available and how much you value those hotel loyalty benefits.

Take advantage of other transfer partners

One of the biggest advantages of the Citi Strata Premier® Card is the ability to earn ThankYou points, which can be transferred to several airline and hotel loyalty programs. If you want the option to transfer points to American Airlines but also see value in the card’s other airline and hotel partners, the Citi Strata Premier® Card is a better choice.

Why you might pick the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard®

The Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard® is a strong choice if you want American Airlines benefits. Keep in mind that the card is getting revamped in 2027 with a higher annual fee and new benefits. See NerdWallet's coverage for more details.

American Airlines travel benefits

The Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard® comes with several benefits that can significantly offset the annual fee:

  • Free checked bag: Get a free first checked bag on domestic American Airlines itineraries for the primary cardholder and up to four companions traveling on the same reservation. If you check bags with American, this benefit alone could make the card worth getting.

  • Preferred boarding: The primary cardholder and up to four companions on the same reservation receive preferred boarding.

  • American Airlines Vacations discount: Save 10% on eligible American Airlines Vacations packages.

  • Inflight discount: 25% off inflight food and beverage purchases. This perk is being replaced on Jan. 24, 2027, with an inflight statement credit.

  • $125 flight discount: Spend at least $20,000 during your card membership year and renew the card to receive a $125 American Airlines flight discount. This perk is also changing in 2027; see below.

Starting Jan. 24, 2027, the card will offer:

  • Inflight statement credits: Receive up to $100 back in statement credits annually on inflight purchases. This replaces the old 25% off inflight food and drink purchases.

  • $150 flight discount: Spend at least $20,000 during your card membership year and renew the card to receive a $150 American Airlines flight discount. This replaces the $125 flight discount; the spending requirement is the same.

The inflight statement credits, in particular, will be easy to maximize and could potentially offset a meaningful portion of the card’s annual fee. Combined with the ability to earn Loyalty Points toward elite status and the card’s other perks, that can make the card more valuable for American’s flyers.

Additional lifestyle and travel benefits

The Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard® offers Turo credits. You receive up to $180 annually in statement credits on eligible Turo rentals, with up to $30 back per eligible rental.

On Jan. 24, 2027, the card will add several more perks:

  • Walmart+: Primary cardholders receive a complimentary annual Walmart+ membership, valued at $98.

  • Global Entry or TSA PreCheck: Receive up to a $120 application fee credit every four years.

  • FOX One: Get 50% off an annual FOX One subscription.

  • Travel protections: Get trip delay protection, trip cancellation and interruption protection, worldwide car rental insurance and lost baggage protection.

It’s unusual to see a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit on a card with an annual fee under $200. When that perk kicks in, the card could become a good option for travelers who prioritize AAdvantage miles but also want a credit card that fully reimburses the application fee for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck.

A way to work toward American Airlines elite status

Cardholders receive 1 Loyalty Point for every eligible AAdvantage mile earned from purchases. That means everyday spending can move you closer to AAdvantage elite status, in addition to earning miles you can redeem for flights. American’s entry-level elite status requires 40,000 Loyalty Points, so putting significant spending on the card can help you reach that threshold.

Which card is right for you?

If you want to earn rewards on everyday spending and have the flexibility to move those points to American Airlines — and you don’t need the airline-specific benefits — the Citi Strata Premier® Card is the best choice.

That said, the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard® makes more sense for frequent American Airlines flyers who can take advantage of benefits such as a free checked bag and preferred boarding, or for travelers who want to earn Loyalty Points toward American Airlines elite status through credit card spending.
