What Is Discover Deals?

Until it was discontinued in November 2018, the Discover Deals portal was a way to save on online purchases.

UPDATE Oct. 2, 2018: Discover has announced that the Discover Deals program is being discontinued, effective Nov. 1, 2018.

Most major credit card issuers have online bonus malls that offer discounts or extra rewards for shopping with specific retailers. Some are better than others. The Nerds have consistently rated Discover Deals as the cream of the crop.

Discover Deals: The basics

Discover Deals works pretty simply: You log in with your Discover username and password, then browse available deals. You’ll see a wide range of offers from major retailers, restaurants and other merchants. When you see a deal you like, click through to the retailer's website, shop and pay with your Discover card. We'll repeat that, because it's the key to the whole thing: You must click through from Discover Deals to get the deal.

You can earn an extra 5%-20% cash back at more than 200 retailers when you do your online shopping through Discover Deals. Other merchants offer deep discounts rather than cash back — which, considering you're still saving money, is just as good! For in-store shopping, you have access to point-of-sale coupons, bonus cash-back offers and other discounts only available to Discover customers.

Discover Deals is fully integrated into Discover's mobile app. From the menu, tap "Earn Cashback Bonus," then tap "Discover Deals." You can browse deals anywhere on your phone or tablet, which makes it easier to avoid missing an offer.

For example, say you wind up at a Retailer X store unexpectedly, but you didn’t go online to check out Discover Deals before you left home. Just use the app to search for Retailer X coupons or discounts through Discover Deals.

Discover Deals also provides targeted promotions based on past spending. By analyzing your transaction data, Discover is able to figure out which deals will be most useful to you and sends them your way. Brian Meier, director of rewards marketing at Discover, told NerdWallet that this is one of the features that really makes Discover Deals stand out.

Our favorite Discover credit card

Interested in applying for a Discover card? Our favorite is the Discover it® Cash Back, which is a pretty sweet deal even without taking Discover Deals into consideration. With it, you’ll earn 5% cash back in rotating quarterly categories that you activate (on up to $1,500 in combined spending per quarter) and 1% cash back on all other purchases.

The Discover it® Cash Back charges a $0 annual fee, has no foreign transaction fee, and also provides you with free access to your FICO credit score. You get an introductory APR of 0% intro APR for 14 months on purchases and balance transfers, and then the ongoing APR of 11.99% - 22.99% Variable APR. And new cardholders get a sweet bonus after a year: INTRO OFFER: Unlimited Cashback Match – only from Discover. Discover will automatically match all the cash back you’ve earned at the end of your first year! There’s no minimum spending or maximum rewards. Just a dollar-for-dollar match..
