Vivint vs. ADT Home Security: 2025 Cost, Features

ADT and Vivint are popular home security providers that offer alarm systems with rich features. Both companies offer professional installation and monitoring and sell equipment as packages instead of individual items.
Vivint’s equipment packages start at a higher price than ADT’s, though Vivint’s base kit includes more products.
ADT systems can be self-monitored and self-installed, while Vivint requires professional monitoring and installation. ADT is also one of the most well-established home security companies, with over 150 years in business.
ADT requires a multi-year contract for professional monitoring, while Vivint offers month-to-month payments (unless you’re financing the equipment).
Vivint has higher average customer reviews and a cleaner privacy record than ADT, making it a better choice for those looking for a premium home security provider that’s fully installed and monitored by professionals.

Where Vivint wins
ADT and Vivint rank neck-in-neck for their professionally installed systems. However, Vivint’s contracts are more flexible, and the company earns better customer reviews and has a better privacy record.
Flexible contract
ADT’s professional monitoring services come with a fairly long contract term—36 months minimum in all states except California, which has a 24-month minimum. Though Vivint doesn’t offer a self-monitoring option, customers can pay for professional monitoring month-to-month and cancel more easily if they purchase equipment upfront.
Better reviews
We could not find any public record of privacy breaches at Vivint, but two class-action lawsuits were filed against ADT in 2020 after a former employee allegedly accessed the security systems of over 200 customers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Vivint also has 3.6 out of 5 stars on Trustpilot, a consumer review website, while ADT has just 1.2 out of 5 stars.
Active deterrents
Vivint’s outdoor cameras and doorbells have a theft-deterrent feature that can identify potential “porch pirates” and respond with dramatic lights and sound to let them know they’ve been spotted.
Ease of use, especially for integration
We tried out ADT’s build-your-own self-setup system, a starter kit with just a home base and sensor. We found the setup functional and user-friendly, though integrating the equipment with Nest products involves using several different apps and wasn’t straightforward. ADT doesn’t have its own line of cameras (it only sells Google Nest cameras), so you have to integrate the alarm system with Nest products to record footage.
On the other hand, we found Vivint’s system to be very intuitive and highly customizable, seamlessly integrating with other smart home devices such as smart locks and video doorbells. Keep in mind, though, that we had our Vivint system installed professionally, and that ADT’s professional installation service may help with integration difficulties.
