Qualifying Chase credit card holders are getting a longer time frame during which to earn their card's sign-up bonus.

The three-month extension applies to credit card accounts opened from Jan. 1 through March 31, 2020, a Chase representative confirms. It means those eligible customers now have a total of six months from their account opening date to earn a welcome bonus, rather than the typical three months.

Chase began notifying qualifying cardholders the week of April 13, 2020. The extension comes on the heels of a similar move by American Express earlier this month, in response to disruptions resulting from the COVID-19 outbreak. AmEx's extension is also for three months, but it applies to eligible card accounts approved from Dec. 1, 2019, through May 31, 2020. Terms apply.

As with AmEx's move, Chase's extension will be automatic for eligible cardholders and doesn't require opting in or any other action.

Chase also announced that eligible cardholders who have a "multi-tier" sign-up bonus offer — meaning one that requires meeting two separate spending thresholds to snag the entire bonus — will get extensions for both tiers.

For the first spending tier, the three-month extension (for a total of six months) applies to cards opened in the first quarter of 2020. "Tier 2 premiums would be extended by three months (total of nine months from account open to earn) for accounts opened between Oct. 1, 2019, to March 31, 2020," Chase said in a release, noting that cardholders should be receiving emails with these details over the coming weeks.
