Pros and cons

Pros
  • Free checked bag

  • Early boarding

  • Companion benefit

Cons
  • Has annual fee

  • Requires good/excellent credit

The Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card outdoes its competition, despite its steep annual fee of $250. In part, that's because it comes with a valuable annual companion certificate, which covers the cost of a round-trip domestic economy ticket for someone flying with you once each year. That benefit alone could potentially be worth hundreds of dollars.

The card also comes with a great bonus offer: Earn 50,000 bonus miles and 5,000 Medallion® Qualification Miles (MQMs) after you spend $2,000 in purchases on your new Card in your first 3 months. Terms Apply. It gives you 3 miles per dollar spent on eligible purchases made directly with Delta and directly with hotels; 2 miles per dollar at restaurants worldwide and at U.S. supermarkets; and 1 mile per dollar on other eligible purchases. This isn't the best card for those who can't consistently take advantage of the companion certificate. But for those who can, it could be worth getting.
