Navy Federal Flagship Premier Card: Solid Rewards, Modest Perks for Members

You'll earn a high rewards rate across a wide range of travel expenses. But it falls short on benefits compared with similar cards in its class, and it's not accessible to everyone.

The Bottom Line

4.3

NerdWallet rating

The card’s perks are commensurate with its relatively modest annual fee, but you'll have to be a Navy Federal member to get it.

Detailed Review

Navy Federal Credit Union describes its primary travel-focused credit card as offering a “premium” experience — but that’s taking it a bit too far. Truly premium credit cards are associated with three-digital annual fees, lavish perks and flashy appearances. Sure, the Navy Federal Credit Union® Flagship Premier Visa Signature® Credit Card is made of metal, but everything else about the card feels a bit mid.

Its $95 annual fee is relatively modest, and it does earn high reward rates across a wide swath of travel categories, as well as on dining. But those point values can vary depending on how you use them, and the card's perks — while nice — certainly aren’t extravagant. If you can’t or don’t want to pay several hundreds of dollars in annual fees for a credit card, the Flagship Premier is a decent option. But it’s far from the most valuable travel card on the market.

Another sticking point: Not everyone can qualify for the card. More on that later.

🤓Nerdy Tip

The Navy Federal Credit Union® Flagship Premier Visa Signature® Credit Card is a slightly more upscale version of the (non-Premier) Navy Federal Credit Union® Visa Signature® Flagship Rewards Credit Card, which closed to new applicants on Sept. 10, 2026. Existing holders of that older version can continue to use their card or opt to upgrade to the new Premier version.

Benefits and Perks

Ongoing rewards

The card’s bonus rewards on dining — and its generous definition of travel expenses — will help cardholders accrue points rapidly. Travel purchases that qualify for the card's highest rate (4x back per $1 spent) include airfare and hotels to rideshares and buses (and a lot more).

Welcome offer

Like any travel credit card worth its salt, the Navy Federal Credit Union® Flagship Premier Visa Signature® Credit Card boasts a welcome bonus that lets new cardholders earn a big cache of points. The credit union phrases its offer this way: "For a limited time, open a new card account and earn 50,000 bonus points (a $500 value) when you spend $4,000 in your first 90 days.." That’s a decent chunk of change to put toward your next vacation.

Travel credits

Using either of the Flagship Premier's travel credits is an easy way to negate the card’s annual fee. Like many other travel credit cards at this price point, it features a TSA PreCheck or Global Entry statement credit that renews every few years. And the card's $100 airline credit is sufficiently broad, covering airfare but also in-flight purchases, checked bag fees and seat selection fees. (Note that the credit only activates after you spend at least $100 on airline purchases. A one-time $40 checked bag fee, for example, wouldn't trigger the credit.)

Drawbacks and Considerations

Accessibility

To qualify for any Navy Federal card, you must belong to the Navy Federal Credit Union. To join, you must be an active-duty member of the military, a veteran, a civilian employee or contractor for the Department of Defense, or an immediate family member of someone who is eligible to join. As such, a large swath of people will be unable to apply for the Navy Federal Credit Union® Flagship Premier Visa Signature® Credit Card.

Annual fee

The Flagship Premier's $95 annual fee is modest and in line with what some of the best travel credit cards charge. And annual fees can certainly be worth paying if they deliver enough value back to you. But if you're flat-out opposed to paying anything for the privilege of carrying a credit card, know that you can find some decent travel cards that don't have a yearly cost. One good example is the $0-annual-fee Wells Fargo Autograph® Card. It earns an unlimited 3 points per $1 spent on dining; travel and transit; gas stations and EV charging stations; popular streaming services; and select phone plans. And while it doesn't boast many premier perks like travel credits, the Wells Fargo Autograph® Card does feature things you won't find on the Flagship Premier, including an intro APR offer and, crucially, access to travel partners. More on that below.

Other cards at this price point offer more

The Flagship Premier card’s main draws are its rewards and travel credits. But the card still falls short compared with other midtier travel cards. Consider the $95-annual-fee Citi Strata Premier® Card. It has the same yearly sticker price, and it also earns 3x points on dining — but also at supermarkets and gas and EV charging stations. The Citi Strata Premier® Card also offers robust travel protections and (unlike the Flagship Premier) access to multiple travel partners, to which you can transfer your points for potentially outsize value.

So, if you’re ineligible for the Flagship Premier or any Navy Federal credit card, not to worry: There are several excellent travel card options at the same price point.

No transfer partners

With the Navy Federal Credit Union® Flagship Premier Visa Signature® Credit Card, you do have several redemption options, but one thing you can't do with them is transfer them to specific airline or hotel programs.

If you want a card with a solid rewards rate, similarly flexible redemption options and transfer partners, consider the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card. If you hold this card and book travel through Chase, each point you earn is potentially more valuable. But you also have the option to transfer your points to several loyalty programs.

And as noted above, using your rewards this way can potentially score you an even higher value per point.

How To Decide If It's Right For You

When it comes to the Navy Federal Credit Union® Flagship Premier Visa Signature® Credit Card, the first order of business is eligibility: Are you a member of Navy Federal, or could you be? If not, then you can’t get this credit card — or any Navy Federal card, for that matter.

If you belong to the Navy Federal Credit Union and want a travel card, know that the Flagship Premier is a fine pick. It also happens to be the only true travel card in Navy Federal’s portfolio (as of September 2026). But if you want a travel card with more perks, or one with no annual fee, you’ll have to look beyond the Navy Federal ecosystem.

Alternate Pick: A versatile and robust travel card

Same price as the Flagship Premier but better perks

For many people, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is the gold standard for what a mid-tier travel credit card should be: useful ongoing rewards, a generous welcome offer, extensive travel protections and easy-to-use travel credits. On top of all of that, cardholders get access to Chase’s travel partners that include major brands such as Marriott, United, and Southwest.

Methodology

NerdWallet reviews credit cards with an eye toward both the quantitative and qualitative features of a card. Quantitative features are those that boil down to dollars and cents, such as fees, interest rates, rewards (including earning rates and redemption values) and the cash value of benefits and perks. Qualitative factors are those that affect how easy or difficult it is for a typical cardholder to get good value from the card. They include such things as the ease of application, simplicity of the rewards structure, the likelihood of using certain features, and whether a card is well-suited to everyday use or is best reserved for specific purchases. Our star ratings serve as a general gauge of how each card compares with others in its class, but star ratings are intended to be just one consideration when a consumer is choosing a credit card.
