Esurance’s parent company, Allstate, announced Esurance would be phased out in 2020. Esurance no longer offers new policies. Customers trying to purchase a new policy from Esurance’s website will be redirected to Allstate or one of its affiliates.

To learn more, read our Allstate auto insurance review.

Esurance was an auto insurance company designed for drivers who prefer a fully digital, self-service experience. It was owned by Allstate and available in most states. Rather than a traditional agent-based service, it focused on digital quotes, policy management and claims handling through its website and mobile app.

Esurance offered the standard suite of auto insurance coverages and some optional add-ons, like roadside assistance and rental reimbursement. Standard discounts, including bundling and paying premiums upfront, were available. Esurance also offered a telematic program that tracked driving habits and rewarded good drivers with more discounts.

Though backed by Allstate, Esurance had more than the expected number of complaints to state insurance regulators for a company of its size. This signals mixed customer satisfaction with general service and claims handling.

Allstate no longer markets new policies under the Esurance brand. Customers may find a policy that suits their needs with Allstate or another carrier.

Methodology

Insurer complaints methodology

NerdWallet examined complaints received by state insurance regulators and reported to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners in 2022-2024. To assess how insurers compare to one another, the NAIC calculates a complaint index each year for each subsidiary, measuring its share of total complaints relative to its size, or share of total premiums in the industry. To evaluate a company’s complaint history, NerdWallet calculated a similar index for each insurer, weighted by market shares of each subsidiary, over the three-year period. NerdWallet conducts its data analysis and reaches conclusions independently and without the endorsement of the NAIC. Ratios are determined separately for auto, home (including renters and condo) and life insurance.

Auto insurance ratings methodology

NerdWallet’s auto insurance ratings reward companies for customer-first features and practices. Ratings are based on weighted averages of scores in several categories, including financial strength, consumer complaints and discounts. Our “ease of use” category looks at factors such as website transparency and how easy it is to file a claim. Using our editorial discretion, we also consider customer satisfaction surveys. These ratings are a guide, but we encourage you to shop around and compare several insurance quotes to find the best rate for you. NerdWallet does not receive compensation for any reviews.
