About WoodmenLife insurance

4.3NerdWallet rating

WoodmenLife is a non-profit fraternal benefit society that offers both term and permanent life insurance. Anyone who buys a policy becomes a member, but you’ll have to work with a sales rep to get a quote.

WoodmenLife earned 4.3 stars out of 5 for overall performance. NerdWallet’s ratings are determined by our editorial team. The scoring formula takes into account consumer experience, complaint data from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners and financial strength ratings.

Where WoodmenLife stands out

WoodmenLife gives members plenty of options for life insurance, including a family term life policy that covers both spouses and children. You become a member of this non-profit fraternal society at no additional cost when you purchase a policy. WoodmenLife also offers members perks like shopping discounts, financial education resources, legal templates, and scholarship opportunities.

Where WoodmenLife falls short

WoodmenLife requires anyone interested in learning more about the society’s policies to work with a sales rep. There also aren’t many options for connecting with WoodmenLife. The site doesn’t have a chat function and there’s no email contact information provided for customer support. Additionally, the insurer receives mixed reviews with close to the expected number of complaints from consumers.

WoodmenLife insurance policies

📑 Term life insurance. WoodmenLife sells both individual and joint convertible term life policies, with 10-, 15-, 20- and 30-year terms available. Anyone up to age 80 is eligible to apply.

  • Family term life. WoodmenLife’s family term life policy lets you choose a coverage limit up to $500,000 for each spouse and $10,000 per child. Spouses can convert term life coverage into permanent life insurance up until age 72. When children turn 25, they can also convert their coverage into permanent life insurance. If either spouse passes away while the policy is in force, the coverage is extended to the surviving adult.

📑 Whole life insurance. WoodmenLife offers permanent life insurance policies that provide coverage until the age of 121. You can apply for these policies as long as you are 85 or younger.

  • Whole Life Paid-up at 100. This policy has affordable premiums for those who can opt into making payments until the age of 100.

  • Whole Life Paid-up at 65. The premiums are more expensive but this policy approach means you’d be done making payments by the age of 65, when many people retire.

  • 10 Pay or 20 Pay Whole Life. If speed is a priority, you can choose to pay off your WoodmenLife whole life policy in as little as 10 or 20 years.

📑 Universal life insurance. Universal life insurance offers flexible payments and death benefits combined with cash value growth. You can apply for the company’s universal life policies if you're 85 or younger.

  • No-Lapse Guarantee Universal Life. This universal life policy provides guaranteed coverage, but may be a better fit for older adults who want to cover final expenses.

  • My Choice Indexed Universal Life Insurance (IUL).  With this permanent policy, the cash value is tied  to your choice of a fixed rate account or to the S&P 500 Index.

WoodmenLife insurance riders

Depending on the life insurance policy, you may be able to opt into the following riders. Some are only available for an additional fee.

  • Accelerated death benefit rider. Allows you to access a portion of your death benefit early if you’re diagnosed with a terminal or chronic illness.

  • Waiver of premium rider. This policy add-on pauses your premiums in certain situations (such as becoming disabled) that are specified in your policy.

  • Guaranteed insurability rider. This policy feature usually costs more but provides the ability to secure more life insurance coverage in the future without a medical exam.

WoodmenLife customer complaints and satisfaction

A strong sign of consumer satisfaction is how many people complain about their insurance company to state agencies. Over three years, WoodmenLife has drawn close to the expected number of complaints to state regulators for a company of its size, according to a NerdWallet analysis of data from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.

  • Reddit is an online forum where users share their thoughts in “threads” on various topics. The popular site includes plenty of discussion on financial subjects like life insurance, so we sifted through Reddit forums to get a pulse check on how users feel about insurers. People post anonymously, so we cannot confirm their individual experiences or circumstances.

WoodmenLife earns mixed reviews on the Reddit platform, with some expressing concern about high-pressure sales tactics. However, other users chimed in that WoodmenLife was reliable and had policies worth considering, especially for competitive pricing.

It’s worth noting that in several threads, users seemed confused about whether WoodmenLife (formerly referred as Woodmen of the World) or Modern Woodmen was being discussed. Modern Woodman is an entirely different fraternal society that also sells financial products, including life insurance.

How WoodmenLife’s customer experience stacks up

The WoodmenLife website is easy to use with pages for each type of life insurance. While there’s no pricing information, this insurer gets kudos for being transparent about policy details and clearly outlining term lengths, riders and issue ages online. WoodmenLife’s site has a robust FAQ section, but there isn’t a live chat or chatbot or even an email address for customer support.

Although WoodmenLife seems to have an app for members to manage shopping discounts, it doesn’t house the society’s life insurance policies. Instead, there’s an online portal for policyholders, though you’ll have to mail forms for some essential policy management functions like changing beneficiaries. The company supports online claims.

What it’s like to apply for a policy with WoodmenLife

You can explore WoodmenLife’s insurance products and even compare plans on the site, but you won’t be able to get an instant quote or purchase a policy online. Selecting “get a quote” takes you to a pop-up window that asks for personal details so a sales rep from WoodmenLife can contact you.

If you’re interested in applying for a WoodmenLife policy, you can also search for a rep near you and contact them directly.

How we rate the best life insurance companies

✅ 445 life insurers reviewed

📝 210 policies assessed

🔢 1,515 data points analyzed

📊 Star rating categories

When NerdWallet evaluates life insurance companies, our editorial team considers the insurer's strengths and weaknesses, as well as the things that matter most to customers buying a long-term financial product. We then weigh these factors carefully:

💰 Financial strength (35%). We use AM Best ratings to confirm an insurer’s financial stability and ability to pay claims far into the future. The top life insurance companies have an exceptional financial strength rating of A+ or A++ (Superior).

🗣️ Consumer complaints (35%). Our top-rated life insurance companies have fewer than the expected number of complaints to state regulators over a three-year period, according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners — so you can expect a smoother customer experience.

☎️ Consumer experience (20%). Insurers who allow consumers to contact them by email, phone and live chat earn the highest scores. The same goes for insurers who support online quotes, beneficiary changes and claims.

👀 Transparency (10%). Our methodology gives higher scores to transparent insurers who clearly display information about their policy options, coverage amounts and term lengths (if applicable) on their site.

What our star ratings mean

Companies with 5 stars are exceptional, with strong financials, diverse policy lineups and great reputations for customer service.

Companies with 4.5 stars are excellent, with solid financials and policy offerings, and good customer service track records.

Companies with 4.0 stars are good, and potentially great for people looking for niche coverage options.

Companies with 3.5 stars or fewer could do better in certain categories, like financial strength and customer complaints.

NerdWallet does not receive compensation for our star ratings or our reviews. Read more about our life insurance ratings methodology and editorial guidelines.
