The U.S. Bank Business Cash Rewards World Elite™ MasterCard® has a lot to offer for the right business owner.

It earns robust rewards in some popular spending areas, and unlike a lot of other business cards, it also features a lengthy interest-free promotional period on both purchases and balance transfers. Plus, there's a generous sign-up bonus.

Those features, paired with a $0 annual fee, help set this card apart from competitors. But depending on where and how much you spend, other cards may have more to offer, even those with annual fees.

Nerd tip: If the U.S. Bank Business Cash Rewards World Elite™ MasterCard® sounds like a familiar name, there's a reason for that. It was formerly called the U.S. Bank Business Edge™ Cash Rewards World Elite™ MasterCard®.

Key features of the U.S. Bank Business Cash Rewards World Elite™ MasterCard®

Additional benefits: 25% Annual Cash Rewards bonus, up to $250.

Benefits of the U.S. Bank Business Cash Rewards World Elite™ MasterCard®

Extra cash back in business-friendly categories: You’re in luck if your job takes you on the road or you provide your employees with cell phone plans. You’ll earn 3% cash back at gas stations and on cell phone provider purchases. Office supply stores also earn 3% back, so your supply cabinet can remain well-stocked. All other purchases earn 1% cash back.

A generous intro 0% APR period: Running a business sometimes requires purchasing expensive equipment, and you don’t always have the cash on hand to pay for everything at once. With the U.S. Bank Business Cash Rewards World Elite™ MasterCard®, you’ll pay an intro 0% on Purchases and Balance Transfers for 15 billing cycles, and then the ongoing APR of 14.24% - 25.24% Variable APR. Many small-business credit cards lack such a generous interest-free time period.

A juicy sign-up bonus: The U.S. Bank Business Cash Rewards World Elite™ MasterCard® offers this welcome bonus: Earn a new cardmember bonus of $500 after you spend $4,500 in eligible net purchases on your card within the first 150 days of account opening. This is a significant increase from what the card’s predecessor — the U.S. Bank Business Edge™ Cash Rewards World Elite™ MasterCard® — offered, which was $150 after you spent $500 in net purchases on your card within the first 90 days of account opening. Note that the spending threshold is also much higher and the time frame for earning the bonus is much longer.

An annual cash rewards bonus: For every cardmember anniversary you celebrate, you’ll get a bonus of 25% of the cash back you earned in the previous year, up to $250.

Drawbacks of the U.S. Bank Business Cash Rewards World Elite™ MasterCard®

A low cash-back rate for most purchases: The possibility of 3% cash back is exciting, but most purchases will earn you only 1%. If you don’t spend much on gas, cell phone plans or office supplies, your earnings will be meager. The Capital One® Spark® Cash for Business earns an unlimited 2% cash back on all purchases. There’s also a sign-up bonus: Earn a one-time $500 cash bonus once you spend $4,500 on purchases within 3 months from account opening.. The annual fee is $0 for the first year, then $95. In the second year of card membership when the fee kicks in, you’ll offset it with cash-back rewards if you spend more than $4,750.

No travel rewards: If running your business involves less time at a desk and more time on the road, consider a travel rewards card that can convert your spending into discounted travel. The $0-annual-fee Bank of America® Business Advantage Travel Rewards World Mastercard® credit card earns:

  • 3 points per $1 when you book your rental cars, hotel stays or airline tickets through the Bank of America® Travel Center.

  • 1.5 points per $1 everywhere else.

  • Get 75% more points on the base earn of every purchase you make when you’re a Preferred Rewards for Business Platinum Honors tier member. That means you will earn 2.62 points for every $1 you spend and 4.12 points per every $1 you spend at the Bank of America® Travel Center.

There’s also a sign-up bonus: Earn 25,000 bonus points when you make at least $1,000 in net purchases within 60 days of your account opening which can be redeemed for a $250 statement credit towards travel purchases.

High spenders can get larger bonuses elsewhere: Earn big rewards for your big business expenses with the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card. This $95-annual-fee card offers a decidedly premium sign-up bonus: Earn 80,000 bonus points after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. That's $1,000 toward travel when you redeem through Chase Ultimate Rewards®. You’ll also earn:

  • 3 points per $1 on the first $150,000 spent each anniversary year in combined purchases in these categories: travel, shipping purchases, Internet, cable and phone services, and on advertising purchases made with social media sites and search engines.

  • 1 point per $1 on all other purchases.

Points are worth 1.25 cents each when redeemed for travel through Chase Ultimate Rewards®.

You’ll pay foreign transaction fees: The U.S. Bank Business Cash Rewards World Elite™ MasterCard® charges a 3% fee if an overseas purchase is made in a foreign currency, and 2% if it's in U.S. dollars. If you travel internationally, a card with no foreign transaction fee — like any of the previously mentioned card alternatives — would fit the bill.

It requires excellent credit: Entrepreneurs with fair credit (a FICO score of 630-689) are more likely to qualify for a card like the Capital One® Spark® Classic for Business, which can help you build business credit. While there’s no sign-up bonus, you’ll earn 1% cash back on all purchases. The annual fee is $0, but the interest rate is on the high side. The ongoing APR is 25.24% Variable APR.

Should you get the U.S. Bank Business Cash Rewards World Elite™ MasterCard®?

The highlight of the U.S. Bank Business Cash Rewards World Elite™ MasterCard® is its long introductory 0% APR period, a major plus for anyone who plans to carry or transfer a balance. The business-friendly cash-back categories and 25% annual bonus can be lucrative if those categories make up much of your spending. But other small-business credit cards offer higher bonuses, more flexible cash-back categories and travel rewards, which may better suit your particular business.
