WHY PICKING THE RIGHT SOFTWARE MATTERS
If your tax situation is simple — you have a job, received a W-2 from your employer or you’re not a high-powered stock trader — the free or basic version of the various programs probably will work. But add kids, a house, investments, a rental property, a side gig such as driving for Uber, or a lot of deductions, and you’ll need a more advanced version of the software.

Before choosing a tax package, know what you’ll need to complete your return based on what’s happening in your financial life. Otherwise, you might buy a version that doesn’t meet your needs or is too expensive for your situation.

Note: Our tool looks only at online, cloud-based software. Many of these providers also offer comparable packages that are available on CDs or can be downloaded to a desktop computer.

DO I NEED A PROFESSIONAL?
If your tax situation is exceedingly complex or if don’t mind paying someone else to do the work, then you might want to hire a tax preparer. But for many people, today’s tax software can handle the job. Read more about determining the best way to file.

A NOTE ABOUT FREE SOFTWARE
The tool may point you to a free version, but you might not be eligible to use it, depending on your income or other rules set down by the IRS.
