The Guide to JetBlue Seat Selection

JetBlue's seat selection policy is based on the type of fare, so include the selection fee when comparing prices.

JetBlue Airways charges more for seat selection than any other major U.S. airline, according to a NerdWallet analysis, so it pays to know when you can pick a seat for free.

The airline offers several seat options, including standard economy seats, extra-legroom seats and lie-flat Mint suites. But whether you can select a seat for free depends on the type of seat and fare you book, as well as whether you have Mosaic elite status.

Here’s what to know about JetBlue seat selection, including the different seat types, how much seat selection costs and when you can choose a seat for free.

JetBlue seat types

JetBlue offers several onboard experiences, ranging from standard economy to lie-flat business-class seats.

Main

JetBlue’s standard economy product is called Main, and there are three types of seats in this cabin.

  • Main: Economy seats throughout the Main cabin. These seats may be complimentary, depending on the fare type chosen.

  • Main Preferred: Economy seats located closer to the front of the cabin. They cost extra.

  • Extra Legroom: Seats with additional legroom that are located over the wing, in front of the Main Preferred seats. These seats also cost extra.

All Main cabin passengers receive complimentary snacks, drinks and Wi-Fi. Each seat also offers an entertainment screen with live television and movies.

EvenMore

EvenMore is JetBlue’s premium economy experience, and the seats are located in front of the Main cabin. These seats offer up to 38 inches of legroom and include priority boarding, priority security (at select airports) and dedicated overhead bin space.

Travelers receive three complimentary alcoholic drinks, unlimited nonalcoholic drinks and snacks, along with free Wi-Fi and a seatback entertainment screen with movies and live TV.

BlueFirst

BlueFirst is JetBlue’s new domestic first class, which is expected to start flying on Dec. 8, 2026, on non-Mint aircraft and routes.

Adding a domestic first class product allows JetBlue to better compete for travelers who prefer to fly first class within the U.S., a market currently served by American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines.

Mint

JetBlue’s premium business class experience is called Mint, and it is available on select domestic and international routes.

Every seat in JetBlue Mint transforms into a lie-flat bed and includes mood lighting and various storage compartments; you'll get a 15-inch screen or larger. Flying in Mint also includes elevated dining, bespoke cocktails, noise-canceling headphones and an amenity kit with skincare products. On select aircraft, Mint seats are private suites, called Mint Suites, with a sliding privacy door and direct aisle access.

The front row of the cabin also includes Mint Studios, which offer even more space than a standard Mint Suite. Mint Studios also have a large 22-inch television screen, a mirrored vanity, additional storage and a guest seat that can accommodate another Mint passenger during flight.

If a Mint Studio seat is available, it will be displayed on the airplane seat map.

The Mint travel experience also includes a dedicated check-in desk, lounge access (except with Mint Base fares), priority boarding, priority baggage and two checked bags (one with Mint Base fare).

How much does JetBlue charge for seat selection?

JetBlue offers three fare categories: Base, Standard and Flex. The table below shows how the categories compare in terms of flexibility.

Base fares are the most affordable but the least flexible.

Main Base fares do not include complimentary seat selection, but travelers can purchase a seat at any time. Those with an EvenMore Base fare can select a seat for free, but only at check-in. If a seat isn’t chosen, JetBlue will assign one automatically before departure. (BlueFirst Base fares include free seat selection only within 24 hours of departure.)

Comparatively, Standard and Flex fares include complimentary seat selection. This also applies to Mint, except for the new Mint Base fare, which charges for advance seat selection; complimentary seat selection is included only with Mint or Mint Flex tickets. Passengers who want to select a Mint Studio will need to pay extra, and the cost of the seat varies. In an October 2026 sample search for a flight from New York to Paris, a Mint Studio upgrade cost an additional $299 on top of the Mint fare.

JetBlue seat selection fees compared with other airlines

Seat selection fees vary among airlines. To get an idea of what passengers can expect to pay, NerdWallet analyzed seat selection fees across major U.S. airlines and found that JetBlue had the highest average one-way seat selection fee at $73.

JetBlue seat selection for Mosaic members

JetBlue’s elite status is called Mosaic, and there are four tiers, ranging from Mosaic 1 to Mosaic 4. Mosaic members receive complimentary access to certain upgraded seats, with the benefits depending on their status level.

All Mosaic members, plus JetBlue Premier Card holders who book with their card, can get complimentary space-available upgrades to BlueFirst for themselves and one companion. Main Base and EvenMore Base fares aren't eligible.

How to select a seat on JetBlue

You can select a seat during the booking process, or after, through JetBlue’s website or mobile app. During booking, you’ll first choose your fare type (Base, Standard or Flex), which determines whether complimentary seat selection is included.

After you’ve selected the flight, you’ll see a seat map displayed with the available seats and any applicable fees. For example, passengers who purchase a Main fare can choose eligible Main seats for free but will see prices for upgraded seats.

If you purchase a Main Base fare, all advance seat selections will include an additional fee. Mint passengers can select an available Mint Suite at no additional cost or pay extra for an available Mint Studio.
