It's been a big week for the American Express® Gold Card.

On the heels of news that the card will soon earn bonus points on "restaurants worldwide" (as opposed to only at U.S. restaurants), the issuer has another announcement:

"We are bringing back our limited-edition rose gold card," said Sabrina Sodja, vice president of U.S. consumer premium products, American Express.

But this time there's a catch: Eligible applicants can get the American Express® Gold Card in the distinctive rose gold hue only when they're referred by a current cardmember. And this offer is available only through July 17, 2019. (Existing cardholders can visit the AmEx mobile app to make a referral, or visit this site.)

AmEx says existing holders of the American Express® Gold Card who refer new applicants to the card can receive 10,000 Membership Rewards points for each referral, up to a total of 55,000 Membership Rewards points per year. New Gold or Rose Gold cardmembers are also eligible for this welcome offer: Earn 60,000 Membership Rewards® points after you spend $6,000 on eligible purchases on your new Card in your first 6 months of Card Membership. Terms Apply.

According to Sodja, when the rose gold version was offered as part of the card's revamp in 2018, "it did really well. Sixty-five percent of new members opted for that version."

Partner perk added

AmEx also announced that it has added online wholesaler Boxed to the list of partners where the American Express® Gold Card's $120 annual dining credit (split into $10 monthly credits) can be used. Eligible partners already include participating Shake Shack locations, The Cheesecake Factory, Ruth’s Chris Steak House, Grubhub and Seamless.
