Chase Sapphire Preferred Credit Card
NerdWallet rating

As part of a larger overhaul of Chase's Sapphire credit card portfolio, the long-serving Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is transitioning to a program that changes how points are valued when redeemed for travel. The card is also boosting its welcome offer for a limited time.

For its Sapphire cards, Chase has added a new redemption program called "Points Boost," which allows you to redeem your Ultimate Rewards® points on select airline tickets and hotel stays at an elevated rate through Chase's travel portal.

But for travel redemptions via Chase that aren't labeled as a Points Boost deal, point values are going down.

Here's a detailed look at what's changing:

🤓Nerdy Tip

The Points Boost program also affects the new Sapphire Reserve for Business℠, as well as the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card.

What to know about point values

Before the Points Boost program was instituted, points earned with the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card were worth 1.25 cents each when redeemed for travel through Chase. Here's how Points Boost changes that:

  • On airline and hotel bookings eligible for Points Boost in Chase's travel portal, points will be worth 1.5 cents each.

  • For premium cabin tickets eligible for Points Boost, points may be worth up to 1.75 cents each.

  • On all bookings not eligible for Points Boost, points are worth 1 cent each.

Redemption values for cash, gift cards and other options remain intact, and you can still transfer your points to Chase's various travel partners at a 1:1 ratio.

Airlines

  • Aer Lingus (1:1 ratio).

  • Air Canada (1:1 ratio).

  • Air France-KLM (1:1 ratio).

  • British Airways (1:1 ratio).

  • Emirates (1:1 ratio).

  • Iberia (1:1 ratio).

  • JetBlue (1:1 ratio).

  • Singapore (1:1 ratio).

  • Southwest (1:1 ratio).

  • United (1:1 ratio).

  • Virgin Atlantic (1:1 ratio).

Hotels

  • Hyatt (1:1 ratio).

  • InterContinental Hotels Group (1:1 ratio).

  • Marriott (1:1 ratio).

What to know about the timeline

For those who applied for the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card on June 23, 2025 or afterward, the Points Boost system kicks in immediately. Those who applied before then still have some time, but there are dates to keep in mind:

  • For existing cardholders, points earned before Oct. 26, 2025, can be redeemed for travel through Chase at a value of at least 1.25 cents each, until Oct. 26, 2027. Those points will also be eligible for Points Boost offers, making them potentially worth up to 1.75 cents each under the new rules.

  • Points earned after Oct. 26, 2025, will be subject to the standard Points Boost rules: You can get a value of up to 1.75 cents per point on eligible travel bookings, but non-Points Boost redemptions will net you just 1 cent per point. (There will be no 1.25-cent-per-point redemption options for these points.)

  • Starting Oct. 27, 2027, the Points Boost system takes full effect, no matter when the points were earned.

A new welcome offer

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card has also enhanced its welcome offer for new cardholders: Earn 75,000 bonus points after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. It's an increase from the previous introductory bonus, which provided 60,000 bonus points after spending $5,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card will continue to earn rewards in the following categories:

  • 5 points per $1 spent on all travel purchased through Chase.

  • 3 points per $1 spent on dining (including eligible delivery services and takeout), select streaming services and on online grocery purchases (not including Target, Walmart and wholesale clubs).

  • 2 points per $1 spent on travel not purchased through Chase.

  • 1 point per $1 spent on other purchases.

  • Through September 2027: 5 points per $1 spent on Lyft.

The card's other signature perks are also sticking around:

  • A $50 annual credit on hotel stays purchased through Chase.

  • Each account anniversary, cardmembers will earn bonus points equal to 10% of total purchases made the previous year.
