What Amica renters insurance covers

Amica offers all the standard parts of a renters policy. For example, it covers your belongings for scenarios like theft and fire. It also has liability coverage in case your dog bites someone or a guest gets hurt in your home. Plus, it can pay for you to stay elsewhere if your home needs repairs after a covered claim. Learn more about what renters insurance covers.

Optional Amica renters insurance coverage

For policyholders who need additional coverage, Amica offers several options:

Personal property replacement cost coverage. Pays to replace damaged or stolen items with brand-new ones. If you don't add this coverage, Amica will cover your belongings on an actual cash value basis. That means you'll get less of a claim payout for older items that have lost value.

Water backup coverage. Pays to repair or replace your belongings if they’re damaged by water from a backed-up drain or failed sump pump.

Scheduled personal property coverage. Adds extra coverage for valuables like wedding rings or fine art.

Smart devices and computer coverage. Covers phones, tablets and computers for scenarios like accidental damage.

Identity fraud coverage. Assists with expenses if your identity is compromised. This includes help with documentation and a year of credit monitoring.

What’s not covered

Renters insurance doesn’t usually cover flood damage, and Amica’s policies are no exception. The company can help you buy flood insurance for renters if you live in an at-risk area.

Your policy won’t cover earthquakes, wear and tear, or damage you cause on purpose.

Where Amica renters insurance is available

Amica renters insurance is available in Washington, D.C., and all states except Alaska and Hawaii.

Availability may change at any time. Coverage may not be available to all renters in a given state.

Discounts

In select locations, Amica offers discounts for:

  • Being a policyholder with Amica or another insurer for at least two years.

  • Enrolling in autopay.

  • Being claims-free for three or more years.

  • Receiving policy statements electronically.

The company also offers potential savings for those who hope to buy a home someday. For each year you have an Amica Renters Essentials policy, you can earn $100 to spend on a future Amica homeowners insurance policy, up to $500.

Consumer satisfaction

Complaints: One strong sign of consumer satisfaction is how many people complain about their insurance company to state agencies. Amica scores highly on this measure, drawing a very low proportion of home insurance complaints compared to other U.S. insurers.

We determined our complaint scores by analyzing three years' worth of data from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. When comparing insurers, we accounted for company size and total premiums.

JD Power rating: Amica renters insurance ranked above average for customer satisfaction in JD Power’s 2026 U.S. Home Insurance Study.

Online tools

Website: Amica's user-friendly website lets you get a quote, file and track claims, and pay bills.

Mobile app: With Amica's app, you can view your policies and report and track claims. It also lets you pay your bill and contact customer service. While the app has strong ratings on iOS, Android users are less satisfied.

How to file a claim with Amica

You can file a claim on Amica’s website, through its mobile app or by calling 800-242-6422. You can also report your claim via live chat Monday through Saturday.

How to contact Amica customer service

How we evaluate renters insurance companies

Face, Head, Person

👋 I’m Sarah Schlichter, a senior writer and content strategist covering renters insurance. I built NerdWallet’s renters insurance rubric and did the research for this page to evaluate companies. I gathered and analyzed data across four major categories:

  • Companies get better scores when they have consumer-friendly features and low rates of complaints.

    Consumer complaints

We analyze the number of consumer complaints reported to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. The higher the rate of complaints, the lower a company's score.

    Digital tools

We look at how easy it is to interact with insurers by evaluating their digital tools, website and customer support methods. The best insurers have user-friendly features like online quotes and live chat.

  • Companies earn points based on how generous and customizable their policies are.

    Coverage for personal property

Insurers that cover your belongings on a replacement cost basis by default get higher scores. Those with less generous actual cash value coverage score lower.

    Optional coverage

For this category, we look at whether each company offers some of the most useful add-ons, such as extra coverage for valuables.

  • The more affordable a company's policies are, the better its score.

We evaluate the discounts a company offers and, when available, its median rates.

  • Companies score well when they have a healthy balance sheet.

We evaluate an insurer’s ability to pay future claims by using assessments from independent agencies such as AM Best and Demotech. The top renters insurance companies have financial strength ratings of A, A+ or A++.

Frequently asked questions

Amica sells many other products including auto, homeowners, umbrella, condo and life insurance. See NerdWallet’s reviews of other Amica products:

As a mutual company, Amica is owned by its policyholders. You may be able to share in the company’s profits by buying a dividend policy. It costs more than a standard policy but could refund up to 20% of your premium. Dividend policies aren’t available on all types of insurance or in all states.

Unlike some insurers, Amica doesn’t have a list of dog breeds that it won’t insure. Instead, the company considers factors specific to each dog. These include its age, breed, training, temperament and history of aggression.

Renters insurance star ratings methodology

NerdWallet’s renters insurance ratings reward companies for customer-first features and practices. Ratings are based on weighted averages of scores in several categories, including affordability, financial strength, consumer experience and coverage quality. These ratings are a guide, but we encourage you to shop around and compare several insurance quotes to find the best rate for you. NerdWallet does not receive compensation for any reviews. Read our full renters insurance rating methodology.

Insurer complaints methodology

NerdWallet examined complaints received by state insurance regulators and reported to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners from 2023 through 2025. To assess how insurers compare to one another, the NAIC calculates a complaint index each year for each subsidiary, measuring its share of total complaints relative to its size, or share of total premiums in the industry. To evaluate a company’s complaint history, NerdWallet calculated a similar index for each insurer, weighted by market shares of each subsidiary, over the three-year period. NerdWallet conducts its data analysis and reaches conclusions independently and without the endorsement of the NAIC. Ratios are determined separately for auto, home (including renters and condo) and life insurance.
