5 Halloween Destinations to Treat Yourself to in 2026
Theme parks, big cities and small towns put their own spin on the usual haunted houses and fall festivals.

Halloween isn't just about neighborhood trick-or-treating anymore. It has grown into a major seasonal catalyst for the travel industry, with Americans increasingly turning autumn weekends into full-fledged vacations.
And this year, the calendar is giving travelers a major excuse to pack their bags: Halloween falls on a Saturday in 2026. Having the holiday land perfectly on a weekend drastically amplifies its travel appeal. Instead of rushing home from work to pass out candy on a weeknight, families and friend groups can turn the main event into a full getaway without burning through finite vacation days.
To help travelers find the best value for an autumn getaway, NerdWallet collaborated with global travel search engine Kayak to track down the most budget-friendly spooky season trips. We started by compiling a curated checklist of 20 popular, Halloween-centric destinations worldwide. From there, Kayak pulled comprehensive flight and hotel search data for October 2026 to evaluate the true baseline cost of visiting each spot, narrowing our final list down to the absolute cheapest top five entries. Prices are based on a round-trip, economy ticket departing from the U.S., as well as a one-night stay in a standard, double occupancy room.
The resulting data shows that you don't have to break the bank to get your seasonal travel fix if you target the right cities. Whether you're chasing world-class theme park spectacles, immersive horror attractions, or historic ghost tours, these five destinations offer incredible experiences worth planning a trip around.
Orlando reigns supreme as a premier Halloween travel destination, with several major theme parks hosting massive after-hours events. Universal Orlando Resort's Halloween Horror Nights returns for its 35th year, running select nights—typically Wednesday through Sunday—from Aug. 28 through Nov. 1, 2026. This year's theme is "Infernal Carnival of Nightmares," and mazes include Jack & Oddfellow: Chaos & Control and a house based on the film "Sinners."
Walt Disney World Resort has its own (tamer) after-hours event. Rather than haunted houses, Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party offers trick-or-treating stations, parades and shows. It sells out every year, so if it's on your list, buy early. Daytime visitors can still catch Halloween-themed shows, parades and seasonal treats.
Even the smaller Orlando theme parks have their own Halloween offerings, including SeaWorld's Howl-O-Scream and Brick-or-Treat at Legoland.

Las Vegas has plenty of costumes and entertainment year-round, but Halloween is a particularly fun time to visit. For people who want the Universal Halloween Horror Nights experience without the rides, Las Vegas has Universal Horror Unleashed —a permanent, year-round horror experience located in AREA15. The attraction features intense haunted houses, roaming scare actors and themed eateries.
October 2026 average airfare: $388.
October 2026 average hotel rate: $215.
October 2026 combined trip cost: $603.
3. New Orleans, Louisiana
Famous for its year-round voodoo lore, historic cemeteries and legendary ghost tours, the Big Easy is a natural fit for a spooky autumn getaway. During Halloween weekend, the French Quarter transforms into a massive open-air costume party, and the city plays host to the famous "Krewe of Boo" Halloween parade, featuring elaborate floats and marching bands. It offers an incredibly atmospheric and distinct alternative to standard theme park events.
October 2026 average airfare: $410.
October 2026 average hotel rate: $235.
October 2026 combined trip cost: $645.
4. Mexico City, Mexico
For an unforgettable international experience, Mexico City is an incredible autumn hub. While the city embraces traditional Halloween fun, visiting during this late-October window positions you perfectly for the lead-up to Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). The city comes alive with vibrant, massive public altars (ofrendas), fields of marigolds and the iconic Grand Parade down the Paseo de la Reforma, blending seasonal travel with deep, rich cultural history.
October 2026 average airfare: $430.
October 2026 average hotel rate: $231.
October 2026 combined trip cost: $661.
5. Los Angeles, California

Los Angeles brings heavy-hitting entertainment industry magic to its autumn offerings. Southern California is home to major seasonal staples like Universal Studios Hollywood’s Halloween Horror Nights, Disneyland Resort's Oogie Boogie Bash and Knott's Berry Farm's event called Scary Farm.
Outside of the theme parks, the region boasts tamer but beautifully designed options like the L.A. Zoo Lights or local pumpkin patches set against scenic coastal backdrops.
October 2026 average airfare: $466.
October 2026 average hotel rate: $217.
October 2026 combined trip cost: $683.
Shifting windows: The cost of peak spooky season
(Photo courtesy of The Disneyland Resort)
You don't have to travel on Oct. 31 itself to get the full seasonal experience — and the data shows that waiting for peak Halloween can cost you.
"For iconic Halloween destinations, October is when search interest peaks, driving up both flight and hotel prices," says Kayla DeLoache, KAYAK travel trends expert. "If experiencing the destination matters more than visiting during Halloween itself, shifting your trip by even a month can translate into hundreds of dollars in savings."
But much like those Christmas decorations that inexplicably start creeping onto department store shelves well before Thanksgiving, "Spooky Season" is stretching longer and longer every year. The expansion is particularly evident at major theme parks. Case in point: Walt Disney World's Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party kicks off on Aug. 7, 2026—a date that sits closer to the Fourth of July than it does to Halloween itself.
Universal Orlando follows a similar trajectory, launching its massive Halloween Horror Nights on Aug. 28, 2026.
Historically, September is the single cheapest month of the year to visit Disney World, with average one-day adult tickets dipping to their absolute lowest baseline (around $127) as kids head back to school and park crowds thin out completely. Booking a September trip to experience a Halloween party allows you to capitalize on lower airline fares, discounted hotel rooms and cheaper event tickets before the October rush sends prices into overdrive.
To keep your own costs down, take advantage of these extended dates, and lean on shoulder-season pricing.

To identify the most affordable destinations, NerdWallet collaborated with Kayak to evaluate a select list of 20 global, Halloween-centric travel destinations. Flight and hotel searches were tracked between Jan. 1, 2026, and June 28, 2026, targeting travel dates between Oct. 15 and Nov. 5, 2026. Average airfare is based on round-trip, economy tickets; average nightly rates for hotels are for standard, double-occupancy rooms.
