» This page is out of date
In August 2021, ABOC sold its credit card portfolio to TCM Bank and made changes to the reward structure. These cards no longer offer 5X bonus categories, so this page is now out of date.
If you're a rewards enthusiast, few things get your attention quicker than a no-annual-fee credit card like this one. The Amalgamated Bank of Chicago has partnered with Mastercard to bring you a credit card with multiple benefits: the ABOC Platinum Rewards Mastercard® Credit Card. You’ll want to take advantage of all this card's benefits to get the greatest value from it.
Ways to maximize your ABOC Platinum Rewards Mastercard® Credit Card
Spend in bonus categories
When you make qualifying purchases in select bonus categories, such as expenses on home improvement, health and wellness, or travel, you’ll earn 5x the rewards on up to $1,500 in combined purchases each quarter.
Although the bonus categories change every quarter, there’s no need to opt in to earn your bonus rewards — any bonus-category purchase will count automatically. Just be sure to register for an account online and pay attention to the changing categories every three months.
This card is a good fit for people who can take advantage of the bonus rewards categories. After all, earning 5 points per dollar on everyday expenses is appealing. However, be aware that once you reach the spending cap of $1,500 in each category, your points-earning rate drops to 1 point per 1 dollar spent.
Acquire unlimited rewards points
Purchases that don’t qualify for the 5x rewards earn 1 point for every $1 you spend, and there’s no limit to the points you can accumulate.
Plus, there’s no need to worry about your points expiring. As long as you’re a current cardholder, your points won’t expire, so you can save them up for a significant reward if you'd like.
Earn the sign-up bonus
Be sure to take advantage of the sign-up bonus: Earn a $150 Statement Credit after you spend $1,200 on purchases within the first 90 days from account opening. Don't miss out on an easy credit, so plan your spending accordingly to hit the requirement.
Choose your rewards
You can redeem and combine your rewards points through the ABOC Rewards portal for a variety of options, including:
Cash in the form of a statement credit.
Travel, including airfare, hotels, car rentals, cruises and more.
Merchandise purchased through the ABOC Get Extra Points website.
Gift cards from national retailers, restaurants and hotels.
You also have the opportunity to gift your points to other ABOC Rewards members.
Use the card’s protection benefits
This card comes with an extended warranty on items that have an original manufacturer's (or U.S. store brand) warranty; coverage may be provided for the repair or replacement cost of the item. The card also includes a 60-day price protection. This perk could reimburse you the price difference for an eligible product that you find available for a lower advertised price in that time frame.
As long as you hold the card, you can also enjoy the benefits of Mastercard ID Theft Protection and Mastercard Global Service, offering worldwide, 24-hour assistance with lost and stolen card reporting, emergency card replacement and emergency cash advances.
No foreign transaction fees
This card will be a worthy companion for your next international trip, saving you up to 3% per purchase in foreign transaction fees that are typically charged by other cards.
The bottom line
If you’re looking to earn highly valuable travel rewards or plan to use your rewards strictly for travel, this may not be the right card for you. However, the ABOC Platinum Rewards Mastercard® Credit Card deserves your consideration if you’re shopping for a no-annual-fee credit card with the flexibility to earn bonus rewards in common spending categories. These rotating categories can help you rack up points and potential rewards quickly.
