Even if you’re only a casual American Airlines customer, it can be worth considering the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard®. Besides earning valuable American Airlines miles you can use to save on airfare, this card offers several perks to save you more money and protect your purchases. American Airlines loyalists can benefit further with this card — including through special access to discounted award flights.

The well-known reasons

Here’s a quick look at a few of the well-known benefits of the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard®:

  • Welcome Bonus: Cardholders can get the following welcome bonus: Earn 50,000 American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles after you spend $2,500 in purchases within the first 3 months of account opening.  We value American Airlines miles at 1 cent apiece, making the welcome bonus worth several hundred dollars.

  • Bonus miles on purchases: Earn 2x miles per dollar spent on most American Airlines, restaurant and gas purchases.

  • First checked bag free: Applies to the primary cardholder and up to four companions on the same reservation for domestic flights.

Underrated reasons

Access to reduced-mileage awards

Cardholders get access to American’s Reduced Mileage Award program, which means you can redeem miles for certain discounted round-trip domestic MileSAAver award flights. You can save 7,500 miles on longer flights or 2,000 miles on shorter ones. This discount applies to economy, business and first class tickets, subject to award availability.

$125 American Airlines flight discount

You can earn a $125 American Airlines flight discount after you spend $20,000 or more in purchases during your cardmembership year and renew your card. This discount is in addition to all of the miles you’ll earn by making purchases toward the spending threshold. That said, don’t overspend just to earn this perk. We recommend paying your credit card balance in full every month, because interest charges from carrying balances can offset the value of any rewards.

No foreign transaction fees

If you travel outside the U.S., you won’t pay any foreign transaction fees when using this card for purchases. Other cards often charge around 3% in foreign transaction fees, so this benefit can help you save money if you frequently travel internationally.

Damage and theft purchase protection

If you purchase an item with your card and it’s damaged or stolen within 90 days of purchase or delivery of the item (whichever is first), Citi may pay to repair it or reimburse you up to the amount paid. You’re covered for up to $10,000 per incident and up to $50,000 per year.

Extended warranty

Use the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard® for eligible purchases and Citi will extend the manufacturer's warranty on the item for an additional 24 months. Citi will pay to repair or replace the item or reimburse up to the amount charged on your card, up to a maximum of $10,000. This is a valuable benefit if you’re planning on purchasing a big-ticket item, like a computer or TV.

The bottom line

The Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard® offers a valuable welcome bonus along with a slew of benefits all at a manageable annual fee of $0 intro for the first year, then $99. Even if you’re only a casual American Airlines customer, this card can be worth considering for the underrated perks, like access to discounted award flights, no foreign transaction fees and purchase protections.
