In addition to being one of the largest issuers of prepaid cards, Green Dot has partnerships with retailers like Walmart and handles transactions for Apple Pay Cash.

Consumers have filed more than 1,500 complaints against Green Dot with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, placing the prepaid giant in the top 2% of companies the regulator hears about, according to an investigation by NerdWallet.

What you should know

According to the complaints, Green Dot has caused several problems for consumers. Here are a few things to watch out for:

Frozen funds. Green Dot may freeze your account if you dispute a charge, cutting you off from your money.

Missing money, unknown charges. Many of those who complained said money had been stolen from their accounts or there were unauthorized charges.

Card and account problems. Others say they’ve had trouble activating their cards or withdrawing money from their accounts.

Precautions you can take

  • Keep all your records.
  • Put your complaint in writing to the company.
  • If Green Dot does not resolve the problem, file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission, the CFPB and your state attorney general.
