Another Discover credit card perk is going offline.

Starting April 1, 2019, cardholders of the Discover it® Miles card will no longer receive an annual $30 in-flight Wi-Fi credit, becoming yet another perk the issuer has discontinued over the past several months.

In February 2018, Discover eliminated several benefits from its cards, including extended product warranty, purchase protection, return guarantee, auto rental coverage and flight accident insurance.

In October 2018, the issuer also ended its price protection coverage and shuttered its once-beloved Discover Deals bonus mall.

Discover isn’t alone in scaling back its secondary perks. Other major issuers including Chase and Citi have also cut back on side benefits on several cards.

The upshot

Although the Discover it® Miles no longer comes with many of the attributes that made it shine, it still has some notable features:

  • $0 annual fee: At a time where premium travel cards ask for a high annual price in return for a place in your wallet, the Discover it® Miles still won’t cost you anything to carry.
  • Respectable and flexible rewards: The Discover it® Miles earns a solid 1.5 miles back for every dollar spent. And those miles are flexible and can be used to book travel or redeem for cash back at the same value.
  • Terrific sign-up bonus. Like most Discover cards, the Discover it® Miles comes with a unique sign-up bonus, which the issuer phrases this way: Discover will match ALL the Miles you’ve earned at the end of your first year, automatically. For example, if you earn 35,000 Miles, you get 70,000 Miles. That’s $700 towards travel! The more you earn, the more you get.
  • No foreign transaction fees. The Discover it® Miles won’t cost you extra to use abroad, which is a must for any decent travel card. You should know, though, that Discover’s international acceptance may be more limited than with Mastercard or Visa.
