At NerdWallet, we strive to help you make financial decisions with confidence. To do this, many or all of the products featured here are from our partners. However, this doesn’t influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own.

For many shoppers, there’s nothing more exciting than getting something on sale and nothing more frustrating than paying full price.

If you’re wondering how to save money, you can usually find a good deal with free coupon apps.

We picked five of our favorites. We selected different apps for different types of shopping trips and have spelled out some of the most helpful features of each.

KNOW WHEN TO SAVE (AND SPEND)

NerdWallet tracks your spending and makes it easy to see when you should cut back and when you can spend.

1. Coupons.com

  • Features: The Coupons.com app provides access to hundreds of paperless coupons while you shop (enable your location for nearby offers) or at home before you go to the store. You’ll find coupons for a variety of grocery stores, as well as big-box stores like Target and Walmart. You can also add coupons to store loyalty cards so they’ll be ready when you check out.
  • Works well for: Grocery shopping.
  • Download: iOS, Android.

2. The Coupons App

  • Features: The Coupons App congregates deals, coupons and promo codes from over 100,000 retailers. Use it to create a list of your favorite retailers, browse store and restaurant deals, and check out weekly ads (when you enable your location). Fire up the app when you go to the store so you can show the coupons on your phone.
  • Works well for: Shopping and dining.
  • Download: iOS, Android.

3. ShopSavvy

  • Features: Less about coupons and more about price comparisons, the ShopSavvy app is a barcode scanner. Enable your location to find deals near you and scan a product’s barcode to compare prices. The app also includes product information to better help you decide what to buy.
  • Works well for: Price comparisons.
  • Download: iOS, Android.

4. Target (with Cartwheel)

  • Features: Target’s app asks users to input their favorite Target store location to browse local deals and see the weekly ad. The app also includes Cartwheel, a savings mechanism that allows shoppers to search for and select offers that match the products they’re buying. Open the app and add offers to your list. Then, show your phone at the register to have the coupons applied to your transaction.
  • Works well for: Target shoppers.
  • Download: iOS, Android.

5. CouponCabin

  • Features: The CouponCabin app congregates a variety of offerings, including coupon codes for online shopping, coupons that can be downloaded for in-store shopping and freebie offers. Browse available deals at retailers such as Kohl’s, Ulta and more. Plus, become a member of CouponCabin to access some member-only coupons.
  • Works well for: Online and in-store shopping.
