Progressive Renters Insurance

Progressive

Not yet rated

Sells its own renters policies and those from Homesite, a third-party insurer.
Pros
  • Offers Progressive auto customers a discount on their policy.
  • Single deductible for renters and auto insurance may be available.
Cons
  • Sells its own renters insurance and policies from a third party, which could cause confusion over who’s servicing the policy.
  • Can't manage your policy on the Progressive app.

About Progressive renters insurance

Progressive renters insurance policies come either from an affiliate called Progressive Home or from Homesite, a third party. When you reach out for a quote, Progressive’s in-house insurance agency, Progressive Advantage Agency, will pair you with one of these options. In either case, you'll get a bundling discount if you also have Progressive car insurance.

Best for: Existing Progressive car insurance customers looking for bundling savings.

Not ideal for: Renters hoping to manage their policy with an app.

  • We make every effort to rate each company we review. However, we’re sometimes unable to provide a NerdWallet star rating for insurers that work with multiple third parties to underwrite their policies. That’s because the quality of the policy you get may vary depending on the coverage options, financial strength and other factors of each separate underwriting company.

Where Progressive stands out

Discount for bundling. A bundling discount could save you money and make for convenient payments, too.

Single deductible. Having to pay only one deductible for a claim affecting both your belongings and your car is a nice perk. It's available to some policyholders.

Where Progressive falls short

Third-party policies. Having some policies that don’t come directly from Progressive could cause confusion over where to file a claim or how to manage your policy.

Mobile app. You can’t manage your renters policy through the Progressive app.

What Progressive renters insurance covers

Regardless of whether you end up with a Progressive Home or Homesite policy, it will include:

Optional coverage

You can also add these two types of optional coverage to your policy:

  • Water backup coverage to fix damage if a drain backs up into your home.

  • Personal injury coverage in case someone sues you for slander or libel.

Discounts

Discounts vary depending on where you live and which company insures you. You may be able to save by:

  • Bundling multiple policies with Progressive.

  • Getting a quote at least three days before your policy takes effect.

  • Paying your premium in full, upfront.

  • Receiving policy documents by email.

  • Living in a gated community or having a security guard in your complex.

If you get your renters policy through Progressive Home, you could also be eligible for a single deductible for both auto and renters insurance. (A deductible is the amount of a claim you’re responsible for.) You’ll pay only one deductible if you need to file claims for the same incident on both your auto and renters policies.

Say someone breaks your car window and steals a few personal items. If you had a $500 deductible on each policy, you’d pay it only once.

Where Progressive renters insurance is available

Availability may change at any time. Coverage may not be available to all renters in a given state.

How we review renters insurance

Our editorial team considers these factors when reviewing renters insurance companies:

  • This rating is based primarily on consumer complaints to state regulators, as reported by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. We also evaluate whether companies have customer-friendly features such as online claims filing and quotes.

  • We look at how companies cover your personal belongings and how many common optional endorsements they offer.

  • We evaluate the discounts a company offers and, when available, its median rates.

  • We use AM Best and Demotech ratings to confirm each insurer’s long-term financial stability and ability to pay claims.
