Let’s face it, very few students enjoy a free ride to college to play varsity sports. Yet there are still lots of sports-oriented scholarships that do not rely on pure athletic ability. Take a look at our list of sports scholarships for non-athletes. We found the top scholarships in areas including sports journalism, sports medicine and physical education and assembled a quick list of resources. Some are specific to school or region, but others are open to students throughout the U.S. Although this list is a good starting point for scholarship seekers, you should contact your school for opportunities more directly linked to your studies and locale.

In recognition of Lou Prato’s service to the Radio and Television Digital News Association, this scholarship is awarded annually to students who demonstrate strong journalism values in sports reporting.
Offered by the Connecticut Sports Writers Alliance, this award is given to a high school senior from Connecticut pursuing a career in sports journalism. Winners have the opportunity to apply for additional aid throughout the course of their undergraduate studies.
In honor of a former editor in chief of the Daily Eastern News, this award goes to a senior journalism major at Eastern Illinois University who has at least four semesters of involvement in sports journalism at the Daily Eastern News.
This award, which has been offered for more than 50 years, goes to a high school senior attending Vanderbilt University for sports writing.
Offered by Pi Lambda Theta, this award goes to college students with a 3.5 GPA or higher pursuing a career in K-12 physical education.
CANFIT offers scholarships to certain minority undergraduate students in California as well as those enrolled in master or doctoral programs in nutrition, public health or physical education.

Only available to students at Northwestern Oklahoma State University, these scholarship are given to students pursuing careers in physical education or coaching.

A sum of $2,000 is awarded to a student in exchange for a six-week, full-time summer internship at the UPMC Center for Sports Medicine in Pittsburgh. During the internship, the student will observe medical procedures and assume responsibilities of a physical therapy aide.
Every year, $2,500 awards are handed out to several students in accredited entry-level athletic training programs.
The ACSM offers a number of grants and awards for research and education in categories such as physiology, nutrition and sports medicine.
The West Chester University Department of Sports Medicine gives out several scholarships annually to undergraduates in all four years. Check the website for details.
