In 2025, Barclays became the issuer of the GM credit card, taking over from Goldman Sachs. As part of the transition, Barclays made several changes to the card, some of which have made it more attractive than co-branded cards from other automakers.

Its welcome bonus, for instance, laps the one offered by the MINI credit card, and its rewards surpass the rates on the Lexus card. It even outclasses the Jeep card, a pretty solid co-branded card in its own right, by giving cardholders not one but two 0% APR promotions.

Here are five things to know about the GM credit card.

1. Reward rates are high

The GM credit card earns excellent rewards on GM and non-GM purchases. Cardholders get:

  • Unlimited 7 points per $1 spent on eligible GM purchases. That includes new or certified pre-owned vehicles, GM parts and accessories purchased at a GM dealership or through GM websites; GM insurance purchases; Sirius XM transactions; and OnStar transactions. This rate may increase to 10 points per $1 for cardholders who are also members of the GM Rewards Program. (GM cardholders are automatically enrolled.)

  • Unlimited 3 points per $1 spent on all other purchases.

Points expire seven years from the date of the cardholder’s last account activity.

2. Redemption options are extensive, but cash back isn't one of them

Points are worth 1 cent each when redeemed through General Motors. Points can be redeemed toward the following:

  • Purchase or lease of a new Chevrolet, Buick, GMC or Cadillac.

  • GM or Cadillac Financial auto loan. 

  • General Motors Insurance premium. 

  • Purchase of a CarBravo certified used vehicle. 

  • Non-vehicle GM purchases, like oil changes, tire purchases and tire rotations; purchases of car parts and accessories at GM dealerships; most OnStar or Connected Services plans as well as Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac protection plans.

Points can also be shared with other GM members. Note, however, that points can’t be redeemed for cash back. Other cards such as the BMW and Dodge credit cards do give their cardholders that redemption flexibility.

3. Its welcome offer is valuable

The GM credit card’s welcome offer is generous, especially for a card with no annual fee. New cardholders can earn 30,000 bonus points after spending $1,000 in the first 90 days of account opening.

Given that 1 point is worth 1 cent, that bonus has a $300 value.

4. Two APR offers can save money on interest

The GM card comes with two 0% APR promotions, which may be a welcome perk for those who plan to spend a large amount of money on a new vehicle or expensive repairs.

  • For qualifying GM purchases greater than $499 made within 30 days of account opening, cardholders get a 0% APR period for the first nine billing cycles from the transaction date. This promotion may only be used one time. 

  • For qualifying GM purchases greater than $499 made after 30 days from account opening, cardholders get a 0% APR period for the first six billing cycles from the transaction date. There’s no limit on the number of times cardholders can use this benefit.

Those are welcome features for those who may need to finance, say, an expensive car repair. Just be aware that you can find cards with much longer promotional APR periods. The Wells Fargo Reflect® Card, for example, offers a 0% intro APR for 21 months from account opening on purchases and qualifying balance transfers, and then the ongoing APR of 17.49%, 23.99%, or 28.24% Variable APR

Unlike the GM credit card, though, it doesn't offer ongoing rewards on spending.

5. There’s a business version of the card

Barclays also issues the GM Business Mastercard for business owners. Like the consumer GM card, it has a $0 annual fee and two 0% APR promotions. However, the GM Business offers a more generous welcome offer worth 100,000 bonus points for new cardholders who spend $5,000 in the first 5 months of account opening.

The business version, too, earns 7x back on eligible GM Purchases and 3x back on all other purchases. However, unlike the consumer version, cardholders cannot combine points they earn with the card with points earned by being GM Rewards loyalty program members.
