NerdWallet's take on Liberty Mutual auto insurance
Liberty Mutual earned 4.5 stars out of 5 in our analysis for its digital offerings and discounts, in addition to a wide selection of coverage offerings.
Best for: Drivers who want to add lots of different types of coverage to a policy.
Not ideal for: Drivers who want car insurance from a company with a better complaint rating.
Where Liberty Mutual auto insurance stands out
Coverage options. Liberty Mutual has a wide slate of coverage options, including new or better car replacement. Liberty Mutual also has perks for teachers, including insurance for damage from vandalism and personal property coverage.
Digital features. Using Liberty Mutual’s website or app, you can get quotes, make or track claims, and take photos of your car’s damage to get an estimate of what it will cost to repair. You can also sign up for RightTrack, the usage-based insurance program, for a chance at a discount for good driving.

Liberty Mutual auto insurance discounts
Depending on your state, you may be able to get an auto insurance discount from Liberty Mutual by:
Owning a home.
Being an active-duty, retired or reserve member of the military.
Getting a Liberty Mutual quote before your policy expires.
Earning good grades or leaving the car at home while living at school.
Having a claims-free driving history.
Avoiding accidents and traffic violations.
Insuring multiple cars.
Bundling your car insurance with another policy from Liberty Mutual.
Paying your full premium in one or two payments or enrolling in automatic payments.
Buying a policy online.
Receiving paperwork electronically.
Being a new teen or a newly independent driver.
Driving a car with safety technology.
Regularly reviewing your policy may also help you pay less for insurance. For example, after a few years, you might be paying for more coverage than your older-model car needs. Once your car costs more to insure than it’s worth, you may be able to drop full coverage car insurance and lower your rates.
Minimum car insurance, a policy that has only as much car insurance as your state requires, is the cheapest insurance you can get. However, we recommend paying for more coverage if you can afford it. Minimum coverage may leave you without enough insurance to cover the damage from a serious accident.
Liberty Mutual auto insurance coverage
Liberty Mutual’s full coverage car insurance includes the types of car insurance offered by most insurers:
- Liability insurance
Liability car insurance pays for others’ injuries or property damage you cause in a car accident, up to your auto policy limits. There are two types:
Bodily injury liability covers others’ medical expenses after an accident where you are at fault.
Property damage liability covers the repair costs to other vehicles, fences, mailboxes or buildings from an accident.
Is it required? Yes. Every state, except for Virginia and remote parts of Alaska, requires drivers to have a minimum amount of liability car insurance in order to drive legally.
- Personal injury protection
Also known as "no-fault insurance," PIP covers your own injuries and medical expenses after a crash, regardless of who's at fault, up to your policy limits. Depending on your state, PIP could also help pay for:
Lost wages if you're unable to work due to your injuries from a car accident.
Services you can't perform because of an accident, such as house cleaning or child care.
Funeral costs if an injury from an accident leads to death.
A small death benefit as a cash payout.
Is it required? Personal injury protection is required in the following states: Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon and Utah.
- Medical payments coverage
Medical payments coverage, or MedPay, helps pay for your medical expenses or funeral costs after a car accident, no matter who's at fault, up to your policy limits. It also pays for medical bills if you or one of your family members is hit by a car while on foot, riding a bike or traveling as a passenger in someone else’s car.
Is it required? MedPay is required in Maine and New Hampshire, and can be purchased as an optional add-on in most other states. In a few states, MedPay can't be purchased because personal injury protection is required.
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage
Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage pays out if you're in an accident where the at-fault driver has no liability car insurance, or not enough to cover your injuries or property damage. It can also be used to pay for your passengers’ and household family members’ injuries.
Is it required? Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage is required in Washington, D.C., and the following states: Connecticut, Illinois, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon, South Carolina, South Dakota, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
- Collision insurance
Collision insurance reimburses you to fix or replace your car if you crash into another car or object. It can also pay for hit-and-runs, rollovers and damage caused by uninsured or underinsured drivers.
Collision insurance becomes less useful the older your car is. That's because it reimburses you for repairs only up to the actual cash value of your car, minus your deductible.
Is it required? Collision insurance isn't mandatory in any state, but most lenders require it if you finance or lease your car. And when you buy collision insurance, you'll likely have to also get comprehensive insurance, which pays for damage to your car from non-traffic-related causes.
- Comprehensive insurance
Comprehensive insurance reimburses you to fix or replace your car after non-traffic-related causes, such as:
Weather events, like hail, floods or tornadoes.
Falling objects, such as tree limbs.
Fire or explosions.
Hitting an animal.
Car theft and broken windows.
Earthquakes.
Vandalism or civil disobedience, such as a riot.
Comprehensive insurance becomes less useful the older your car is. That's because it reimburses you for repairs only up to the actual cash value of your car, minus your deductible.

Optional coverage
Liberty Mutual offers several types of optional coverage, depending on your state, including:
Accident forgiveness. Your premium won’t increase as a result of your first accident if you’ve had no crashes or traffic violations for five years. This coverage is not available in California and may vary by state.
Who might need it? If you qualify for this coverage, it’s worth considering. Normally, being involved in an accident causes your car insurance rates to get significantly more expensive.
New car replacement. If your car is totaled in the first model year and has not yet reached 15,000 miles, you’ll be reimbursed the cost of a new car, not just the depreciated value.
Who might need it? This coverage may be right for you if you’re the driver of a new car and you couldn’t afford to cover (or don’t want to worry about covering) the difference between your car’s depreciated value and the cost of an exact replacement.
Better car replacement. This takes new car replacement a step further: If your car is totaled, you’ll be reimbursed for a car one year newer and with 15,000 fewer miles on it than your totaled car.
Who might need it? Better car replacement might appeal to you if you want to replace your current vehicle with an updated model of the same car. If you’d rather buy a completely different vehicle, or one that’s newer than your old one by more than one model year, you might pass on this coverage.
Deductible fund. When you add this feature to your policy, Liberty Mutual creates a “fund” to lower your collision deductible, the amount that you pay toward a claim. The insurer contributes $70 while you contribute $30 each year. If you have an accident, the amount you pay out of pocket is reduced by the amount of money in the fund.
Who might need it? If you don’t think you could cover a deductible in the future, consider adding this to build up a fund in the meantime — or set aside money on your own.
Gap insurance. If your car is totaled or stolen and you owe more on your loan or lease than it was worth, gap insurance will pay the difference.
Who might need it? You may be required to get gap insurance if you financed or leased your vehicle. Even if it’s not required, gap insurance may be worth having if you have a long-term lease or don’t want to pay the difference between your car’s value and your loan’s balance by yourself.
Original parts replacement. This coverage ensures that if your car is damaged, repairs are made with original manufacturer parts, not aftermarket parts made by other companies, when available.
Who might need it? Original parts replacement coverage may be worth having if it’s important to you that your car’s repairs are done with manufacturer-made parts. Liberty Mutual offers original parts replacement coverage to cars that are 10 years old or newer.
Mexico car insurance. Liberty Mutual works with its partner MexPro to offer car insurance to drivers who travel away from the border and deeper into the interior of the country.
Who might need it? If you’re planning a driving trip into Mexico, you likely need to consider adding this coverage to your policy, or getting coverage from somewhere else. Your United States policy won’t offer the same coverage in Mexico.
Roadside assistance. If you experience car trouble, roadside assistance would cover services like a battery jump, fuel delivery, a flat tire and a tow to a nearby service station.
Who might need it? You might need this coverage if you don’t already have it through a credit card, or from an organization like AAA. It could also be worth adding if you take a lot of road trips.
Rental car reimbursement. After a covered accident, Liberty Mutual will help cover the cost of a rental for as long as your car needs to be repaired, up to a per-day dollar amount you choose.
Who might need it? You may need this coverage if you drive your car everyday and you wouldn’t have another way to get around if your regular car was damaged or totaled.
Liberty Mutual auto insurance for teachers
Teachers’ Auto Insurance is another offering from Liberty Mutual. It provides:
Vandalism loss protection. There’s no deductible if your vehicle is vandalized during school-related events or on school property. (In Pennsylvania, a $100 deductible applies.)
Personal property coverage. Liberty Mutual will reimburse you up to $2,500 per incident if your teaching materials or school-owned property are stolen or damaged while in your vehicle.
Collision coverage. There’s no deductible if your car is damaged in an accident while driving it for school business. (In Pennsylvania, a $100 deductible applies.)
You don’t have to choose between cheap car insurance and a policy with strong coverage. No matter the car insurance that you need, or the optional coverage you want to add to a policy, comparing car insurance quotes from multiple companies can help you find the cheapest coverage for your needs.
RightTrack by Liberty Mutual
RightTrack is Liberty Mutual’s usage-based car insurance program. If you agree to share real-time details about your driving with Liberty Mutual using an app, you could qualify for discounted car insurance rates.
As you drive, RightTrack measures your braking, speed, distraction driving and the time of day that you drive. After participating for 90 days, your driving could qualify you for a discount — or a rate increase in some cases.

How we review auto insurance companies
Our editorial team considers these factors when reviewing auto insurance companies:
- Financial strength
We use AM Best ratings to confirm an insurer’s long-term financial stability and ability to pay claims. NerdWallet does not recommend companies with a rating lower than a B.
- Complaints
These ratings are based on complaints to state regulators relative to a company’s size, according to three years’ worth of data from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. The best auto insurance companies have fewer than the expected number of complaints.
- Ease of use
This category looks at how easily consumers can interact with an insurer through its mobile app and website. This includes how much coverage information is offered online, whether a user can start and track a claim online and get a quote and mobile app scores based on the Apple and Google Play store ratings.
- Discounts
We look at the kind of discounts a company offers and the total number of discounts available.

Methodology
Insurer complaints methodology
NerdWallet examined complaints received by state insurance regulators and reported to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners in 2021-2023. To assess how insurers compare to one another, the NAIC calculates a complaint index each year for each subsidiary, measuring its share of total complaints relative to its size, or share of total premiums in the industry. To evaluate a company’s complaint history, NerdWallet calculated a similar index for each insurer, weighted by market shares of each subsidiary, over the three-year period. NerdWallet conducts its data analysis and reaches conclusions independently and without the endorsement of the NAIC. Ratios are determined separately for auto, home (including renters and condo) and life insurance.
Auto insurance ratings methodology
NerdWallet’s auto insurance ratings reward companies for customer-first features and practices. Ratings are based on weighted averages of scores in several categories, including financial strength, consumer complaints and discounts. Our “ease of use” category looks at factors such as website transparency and how easy it is to file a claim. Using our editorial discretion, we also consider customer satisfaction surveys. These ratings are a guide, but we encourage you to shop around and compare several insurance quotes to find the best rate for you. NerdWallet does not receive compensation for any reviews. Read our editorial guidelines and full ratings methodology for auto insurance.
2025 auto insurance survey methodology
The opt-in survey of 7,503 U.S. adults ages 18 and older was conducted online by Russell Research on behalf of NerdWallet in June and July 2024. Respondents were asked to rate one auto insurance brand they obtained or renewed a policy within the past 12 months, with at least some changes to the original policy. These brands were rated on overall satisfaction, overall value, online experience, trustworthiness, mobile app experience, claims experience and customer support on a scale of 1-100.
Only brands with 100 or more qualifying respondents are reported. Of those respondents: 300 were State Farm customers, 300 were Progressive customers, 300 were Allstate customers, 300 were GEICO customers, 100 were USAA customers, 157 were AAA customers, 100 were Liberty Mutual customers, 100 were American Family customers, 100 were Farmers customers, 100 were Travelers customers and 101 were Nationwide customers.
