While Silver is technically an elite status, the real benefits begin at Gold. Here’s a look at what Gold Medallion status can offer you.
Gold Medallion requirements
For every $1 you spend on a Delta flight or on a partner airline, you earn one Medallion Qualifying Dollar or MQD.
To reach Gold status, you need to spend $10,000.

The earning timeframe is per calendar year, so flights between January 1 and December 31 of the current year count toward status the following year.
Flyers can also earn MQDs toward Gold status on award tickets purchased with SkyMiles. For every 100 SkyMiles redeemed, the flyer will earn 1 MQD.
🤓Nerdy Tip
You will not earn any MQDs toward Medallion status if you buy a ticket in Delta Main Basic, aka basic economy.
Some of these cards also offer you yearly bonus MQDs. Being a Reserve or Reserve Business American Express Card member or Platinum or Platinum Business cardmember will give you a $2,500 MQD headstart each year.
Technically, you could reach Gold status by getting the headstart and making charges on your credit cards, but you would have to spend a lot. Since Gold Medallion status requires $10,000 in MQDs, you would have to spend $75,000 on a Reserve card or $150,000 on a Platinum card.
Of course, you can also combine credit card spending and actual flying to earn status.
How long does Delta Gold Medallion status last?
Once you earn status, it’s good for the remainder of the year you earn it and the entire next year plus all of January the following year. So, for someone who flies enough by June 2026 to earn Platinum status, it would be good from June 2026 through all of 2027, and until January 31, 2028.
So when you’re celebrating the new year, remember the earning period changes even though the status itself does not reset for a few more months.
Delta Gold Medallion benefits
While general SkyMiles members have some benefits (like free Wi-Fi) on Delta flights, Gold Medallions have additional perks that could make a big difference in your travel experience.
Additional miles earned: General SkyMiles members earn 5 miles on Classic or refundable fares and 7 miles on Extra fares. Gold Medallions earn 8 miles per dollar on a regular fare and an additional 2 miles per dollar on Extra fares, for a total of 10 miles earned for each Extra fare.
Unlimited complimentary upgrades: You and a companion are eligible for an upgrade to Delta First or Delta Comfort starting 72 hours before departure. Upgrades to domestic Delta One can happen on the day of departure.
Free checked bags: The first checked bag is free for you and up to eight travel companions. On domestic trips, you also get an increased weight limit of 70 pounds per bag, up from 50.
Sky Priority airport benefits: At the airport, you’ll have access to the Sky Priority check-in lane, priority security (where it’s available), expedited baggage service and priority boarding in Zone 4.
Complimentary preferred seat: You can select a preferred seat for free when booking a ticket. This is not a perk when flying on a Delta Main Basic ticket. These are seats in exit rows, in the front of the main cabin or the window and aisle seats in the bulkhead.
Limited Delta Sky Club access: A Gold Medallion can bring one guest into a Delta Sky Club on the day of travel if both are flying internationally in Delta Premium Select or Delta One. This does not include travel to the Caribbean.
Ability to buy a Sky Club membership: Only Medallions can buy an annual membership to the Delta Sky Clubs. An individual membership is $695 or 69,500 miles.
Priority waitlist: If you want to buy a ticket in a particular class of service but it isn’t available, you can be put on a priority waitlist.
Dedicated phone line: Delta Gold Medallions have access to a dedicated customer service phone line for Medallions and have priority over Silver Medallion members. This can be an extremely valuable benefit during delays or service issues.
Free same-day confirmed changes: If you’re flying in Delta Main or Delta Comfort within the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico or Virgin Islands, you can make a change to your flight without a fee as long as a ticket is available in your fare class. For passengers in other cabins, there just needs to be a seat in the same cabin or a lower cabin. This option is not available for Basic tickets.
Drink vouchers: Gold Medallions are eligible to receive four vouchers for free drinks each membership year, accessible via the Fly Delta app or MyWallet on Delta’s website.
Bag tag: Gold Medallions can select and personalize a luggage tag.
Preferred pricing for CLEAR+: Gold Medallions receive a $40 savings on a CLEAR+ membership. Don’t forget, certain credit cards may be able to get you a free membership for CLEAR+.
Hertz benefits: You’ll earn 6 miles for every $1 you spend with Hertz when booked through Delta Car Rentals, and you’ll also have Five Star Status with Hertz.
Delta Gold Medallions automatically get Sky Team Elite Plus status. This comes in handy when traveling on partner airlines. You’ll have access to Sky Priority check-in lanes, priority security where available and priority baggage handling.
One of the best benefits of Sky Team Elite Plus status is lounge access abroad for you and a guest. No matter which cabin you’re flying in, you can access Sky Team lounges (not Delta Sky Clubs) on the day you’re flying. However, this benefit is not included for flights to and from the Caribbean.
Silver Medallions do not have the same Sky Team status level.
Earning lifetime Gold Medallion status
It’s possible to earn Gold Medallion status for life, but you have to fly a million miles to do it.
Million Milers have a higher priority position for complementary upgrades and receive luggage tags and a gift. Million Miler status is based on total miles flown on Delta and partner airlines over a SkyMiles member’s lifetime. Miles flown on basic economy tickets do not count toward status.
Using Delta Gold Medallion status
While Gold is the middle-of-the-road Delta Medallion status, it does have some benefits that can save you real time and money.
You can check in at airports using the Sky Priority lane, and Gold Medallions have a dedicated phone line for customer service. Preferred seat selection is also free.
You might also get a free upgrade once in a while. Earning extra redeemable miles can help you fly for free at another time.
