Update – October 31, 2013: OfficeMax Will Open Thanksgiving Day!

More evidence that the retail trend of staying open on Thanksgiving is here to stay – Office Max has just announced that it plans to open on Thanksgiving evening this year. Stores will ultimately offer three waves of special deals on Thanksgiving evening and on Black Friday itself. Additionally, the office supply giant will be offering Black Friday deals on their website starting at 12:01 am Thanksgiving morning, making this one of the very earliest Black Friday events we’ve seen so far.

Acknowledging a growing desire among customers to get the earliest possible head start on their holiday shopping, executive vice president and chief digital officer of Office Max, Jim Barr has said, ”We’re bringing Black Friday deals earlier to our stores and online to help shoppers save even more on must-have holiday gifts, while providing them with a convenient, fun and stress-free shopping experience.”  Black Friday enthusiasts are no doubt more anxious than ever to see just what kind of savings Office Max will offer this year.

Best OfficeMax Black Friday Deals from 2012

Last year, OfficeMax rolled out a 12-page spread of Black Friday deals. Office Max gave their customers Friday (from at 6AM) and Saturday (from at 9AM) to shop, but the “door buster” deals only lasted from 6am Friday morning until noon. A few Black Friday highlights worth comparing to this year’s deals include:

  • $499.99 HP Envy 15.6” Laptop w/Intel Core i5, 6GB RAM ($200 off)
  • $299.99 Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 16 GB Tablet ($100 off)
  • $149.99 Serta Big and Tall Executive Chair ($150 off)
  • $149.99 Canon SX160 14 MP Optical Zoom Digital Camera ($80 off)
  • $89.99 HP Photosmart 6520 Wireless e-all-in-one Print/Scan/Copy ($60 off)
  • $69.99 Adobe Photoshop and Premiere Elements 11 Bundle ($80 off)
  • $19.99 Norton (Antivirus) N360 2013 ($70 off)

OfficeMax also provided coupons or special deals for the following items:

  • Up to $200 in store credit for traded in laptops
  • $25 gift card with $199 Kindle Fire HD 16GB
  • 30% off coupon for all furniture
  • 20% off coupon for all paper, ink, and toner supplies
  • $15 off of $50 iTunes gift cards
  • Extra 15% off coupon for all clearance printers
  • An extra 50% off all clearance cameras

Overall, OfficeMax provided ample opportunities for spectacular savings in 2012. Yet, the fine print revealed some hidden fees on their gift card deals and prepaid cards discounts. For example, Office Max offered $15 off of $100 Visa or MasterCard gift cards, but they didn’t explicitly tell consumers that they charged a fee to activate the cards. Office Max also offered a $50 Visa prepaid card with purchase of a Toshiba Satellite Laptop. Prepaid cards are notorious for their hidden fees, and should generally be avoided at all costs. If you see similar gift card or prepaid card deals this year, be sure to ask about any fees associated with them, as there tend to be several.
