If you’re sitting on a pile of American Express Membership Rewards points and want to use them for something other than travel, this limited-time option could be appealing. Through Dec. 31, 2020, you can choose to redeem Membership Rewards points for purchases at a variety of small businesses.

Many small businesses have been hit hard by the pandemic, and an increasing number of consumers are opting to shop small to support them. Generally, options to use points for shopping are limited to large retailers like Amazon.

When you choose to shop with Membership Rewards points at the handful of featured small businesses, you’ll get a value of 1 cent per point. That’s 50% more than you would get if you redeemed points for these kinds of purchases outside of this limited-time promotion.

Note that 1 cent per point is a baseline value you should expect to get when you redeem most points, but if you use the points for travel, you’ll often get a higher value than that.
