About Assurant renters insurance
Assurant renters insurance earned 3.5 stars out of 5 for overall performance. Assurant's policies include coverage that other insurance companies charge extra for (or don’t offer at all). Having coverage for bedbug or mold damage can add value to your premium. But there's a drawback: the company's high rate of consumer complaints.
If you need less coverage, Assurant sells a bare-bones “Liability Only” policy to renters living in its partner properties.
Best for: Renters who want to buy and customize their coverage quickly online. Assurant may also be a good choice for people with poor credit.
Not ideal for: Those who want a company known for strong customer service.
Where Assurant stands out
Coverage. There aren’t many renters policies that cover bedbug damage and extermination, but Assurant’s does. Replacement cost coverage for your personal belongings is another nice perk.
Quick quotes. It’s easy to estimate your price on the Assurant website.
No credit check. Some insurance companies charge higher rates to renters with poor credit. Assurant doesn’t check your credit at all.
Where Assurant falls short
Consumer complaints. Assurant’s high volume of complaints suggests that its policyholders aren’t always satisfied.
No mobile app. Renters who like the convenience of an app will have to use the site’s website instead.

What Assurant renters insurance covers
Landlords sometimes require tenants to buy a policy with a minimum amount of liability insurance, but otherwise, the coverage you choose is generally up to you. Below are the four types of coverage included in most standard renters policies:
- Personal property
Personal property coverage can replace belongings such as furniture and electronics if they're stolen or damaged.
- Personal liability
Renters liability insurance pays out if you're responsible for injuring other people or damaging their property.
- Loss of use
Loss of use coverage pays for hotel stays, meals or other expenses if you have to live elsewhere while your home is repaired.
- Medical payments
Medical payments coverage pays to treat injuries to other people in your home, regardless of fault.

The standard Assurant renters insurance policy covers not only the things you’d expect, but also a few items many insurers don’t include:
Replacement cost coverage for personal belongings. If you have to file a claim, Assurant will pay enough money to buy brand-new items. Some companies offer actual cash value coverage, which pays less for items that have lost value over time.
Mold coverage. Assurant covers liability claims and damaged belongings due to mold.
Coverage for your roommate. You can add your roommate to your policy at no extra cost. Just be sure you’ve got enough coverage for everyone’s stuff.
Bedbug coverage. Although most renters insurance doesn’t cover bedbugs, in some states Assurant will pay for extermination and other costs.
Spoiled food coverage. Depending on where you live, you may also have coverage for spoiled food if your power goes out.
Additional living expenses after a flood. If you have to move out of your home due to flood damage, Assurant may help you pay for somewhere else to live.
Assurant’s policy doesn't cover coverage for flood damage to your stuff. For that, you’ll need to buy separate flood insurance for renters.
Optional coverage
You can add optional coverage to your policy for the following scenarios:
Damage caused by pets.
Earthquake damage.
Damage from a backed-up drain or sewer.
Liability-only coverage
Looking for a cheaper renters insurance policy? If you live in one of Assurant’s partner properties, you can choose the company’s Liability Only policy. This no-frills option won't cover personal belongings, but will cover damage that you cause by accident, either to your own unit or a neighbor’s.
Say you unintentionally start a kitchen fire. The policy might pay to replace your apartment’s charred walls and cabinets, but not your oven mitts.
It also covers personal liability expenses if your dog bites a guest.
Discounts
You can save on fees by paying your renters insurance premium all at once, upfront, rather than on a monthly or quarterly basis.
You may be able to get a discount for having safety and security devices such as alarms, deadbolts or sprinkler systems.
Discounts vary by state.
Consumer complaints
One strong sign of consumer satisfaction is how many people complain about their insurance company to state agencies. Assurant scores poorly on this measure, drawing a very high proportion of home insurance complaints compared to other U.S. insurers.
How we determined our complaint scores We analyzed three years' worth of complaint data from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. When comparing insurers, we accounted for company size and total premiums. NAIC home insurance complaints cover various policy types, including homeowners, renters, mobile home and condo insurance.

Insurer complaints methodology
NerdWallet examined complaints received by state insurance regulators and reported to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners from 2022 through 2024. To assess how insurers compare to one another, the NAIC calculates a complaint index each year for each subsidiary, measuring its share of total complaints relative to its size, or share of total premiums in the industry. To evaluate a company’s complaint history, NerdWallet calculated a similar index for each insurer, weighted by market shares of each subsidiary, over the three-year period. NerdWallet conducts its data analysis and reaches conclusions independently and without the endorsement of the NAIC. Ratios are determined separately for auto, home (including renters and condo) and life insurance.
