Straightforward. Uncomplicated. Easy. These are some of the words people use to describe the Chase Freedom Unlimited® card, and with good reason. However, this card also deserves to be described in a different way: Solid.

The Chase Freedom Unlimited® is one of several rewards-earning cards in the Chase personal card portfolio, sitting alongside the Chase Sapphire Reserve®, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and the Chase Freedom Flex℠. While each of these cards earns either cash back or Chase Ultimate Rewards® points, the Chase Freedom Unlimited® offers a few additional, often-overlooked benefits that layer on sizable value and savings.

But first: The well-known reasons

The Chase Freedom Unlimited® is all about simplicity and ease. The best-known benefits of this user-friendly card include:

$0 annual fee.

Generous welcome bonus: Earn an additional 1.5% cash back on everything you buy (on up to $20,000 spent in the first year) - worth up to $300 cash back!

No need to track bonus categories: This makes the Chase Freedom Unlimited® an ideal choice for people who want to earn solid rewards with minimal effort. In addition to the 1.5% back on up to $20,000 you spend during your first year as part of the welcome bonus, the card earns 5% back on travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards®, 3% back on dining at restaurants (including takeout and eligible delivery services) and at drugstores, and 1.5% cash back on all other purchases with no limits on how much you can earn.

No expiration: Your Chase Ultimate Rewards® points don’t expire as long as your account is open.

No minimum: You can choose to redeem your earnings with either a statement credit or a deposit into your bank account with no minimum cash back redemption, so you can pocket every cent you earn.

Underrated reasons

In addition to the benefits listed above, the Chase Freedom Unlimited® offers some valuable perks that are often overlooked.

Pair it for increased redemption value

While the Chase Freedom Unlimited® is technically a cash-back card, you can increase your earnings if you pair it with a premium rewards-earning card such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or the Chase Sapphire Reserve®. How this works: Earn 1.5% cash back on the Chase Freedom Unlimited®, transfer those earnings to a card that earns Chase Ultimate Rewards®, then redeem them for travel for 1.25 cents or 1.5 cents apiece (instead of the standard 1 cent).

Protection benefits

Purchases you make with the card are covered by an extended warranty protection that extends the time period of a U.S. manufacturer’s warranty by an additional year on eligible warranties of three years or less. This is an excellent benefit that could add a hefty amount of savings, especially if you tend to purchase warranty protection separately.

New purchases are covered for 120 days against damage or theft up to $500 per claim and $50,000 per account. Three words here: Peace. Of. mind.

Cash back on rides

Through March 2025, you’ll get 5% cash back on Lyft rides paid for with the Chase Freedom Unlimited®.

Save on DoorDash orders

You’ll get three months of DashPass for free. DashPass is DoorDash's subscription service that provides unlimited deliveries for a $0 delivery fee on eligible orders over $12. After that, you are automatically enrolled in DashPass at 50% off for the next nine months. You must activate your subscription by Dec. 31, 2024, to take advantage of this benefit.

The bottom line

The Chase Freedom Unlimited® is a straightforward yet strong card. It has a $0 annual fee and offers flat cash back earning categories. It also offers valuable, potentially overlooked benefits such as extended warranty protection and purchase protection. You can pair the Chase Freedom Unlimited® with a premium rewards-earning Chase card to increase your earnings.
