AmEx Gold Increases Spending Requirement for Welcome Offer
At NerdWallet, we strive to help you make financial decisions with confidence. To do this, many or all of the products featured here are from our partners. However, this doesn’t influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own.

New American Express® Gold Card cardholders will have to work harder to earn that bounty of Membership Rewards points.

Beginning on Oct. 17, 2019, the welcome offer is changing: Earn 35,000 Membership Rewards® points after you spend $4,000 on eligible purchases with your new Card within the first 3 months. Terms Apply. Previously, you could earn the same bonus by spending $2,000 in the first three months.

The rewards earning rates remain the same:

  • Earn 4 Membership Rewards points per $1 spent at restaurants worldwide.
  • Earn 4 points per $1 spent at U.S. supermarkets (on up to $25,000 in spending per year, then 1X).
  • Earn 3 points per $1 spent on flights booked directly through airlines or on amextravel.com.
  • Earn 1 point per $1 spent on other eligible purchases.
  • Terms apply.

You’ll also still be eligible for a yearly $100 airline fee credit toward incidental fees on one eligible airline you select. The $120 annual dining credit remains as well: You’ll get up to $10 per month in statement credits when you use your American Express® Gold Card at Grubhub, Seamless, The Cheesecake Factory, Ruth’s Chris Steak House, Boxed and participating Shake Shack locations.

The annual fee is $250.
