The BankAmericard Travel Rewards® credit card: the basics

Earning and redeeming travel rewards has never been easier with the BankAmericard Travel Rewards® credit card. You’ll earn 1.5 points for every dollar you spend on purchases – no gimmicks, no complications. Plus, you’ll pay no foreign transaction fee and the annual fee is $0. The card comes with a sign-up bonus, too: 20,000 online bonus points if you make at least $1,000 in purchases in the first 90 days - that can be a $200 statement credit toward travel purchases.

In addition to the perks you’ll get with the BankAmericard Travel Rewards® credit card, you could also get the benefits that come with the Visa Signature® program. If you’re approved for a Visa Signature card, these include:

  • 24/7 concierge service.
  • Luxury hotel benefits, including room upgrades, free in-room Internet service, and free continental breakfast. Just use your card to book at one of 800+ luxury hotels.
  • Travel protections, including lost luggage reimbursement and access to Travel and Emergency Assistance services.

Where the BankAmericard Travel Rewards® credit card shines

Without question, the best thing about the BankAmericard Travel Rewards® credit card is how easy it is to earn big rewards. Most travel credit cards require you to spend strategically in order to net maximum points, which means you’ll have to be constantly vigilant about where you’re using your card. But with the BankAmericard Travel Rewards® credit card, you’ll be getting 1.5 points on every dollar spent on purchases — no fancy footwork necessary.  For the busy and disorganized among us, the simplicity of this earning structure is a godsend.

On the flip side, when it comes time to redeem your points, the BankAmericard Travel Rewards® credit card makes it easy to get the most out of your rewards. This is because all you have to do is book your travel as you normally would, then go online and redeem your points for a statement credit toward those travel purchases. As few as 2,500 points can be redeemed for air travel, hotel bookings, rental cars, cruises — even baggage fees. Also, if you don’t have enough points to pay for the whole amount of your plane ticket or hotel stay, that’s fine. You can redeem your available points for a partial travel credit.

All this means that you can shop around for the best prices on your trip and still be able to use your travel rewards. You don’t have be wedded to a particular airline or hotel chain to redeem your points. This degree of flexibility is hard to find in a travel credit card, so it’s a feature that makes the BankAmericard Travel Rewards® credit card really special.

Earning extra rewards is a cinch if you know where to look

Earning 1.5 points per dollar spent is already a good deal, but there’s the potential to earn even greater rewards if you know where to look.

For instance, if you’re a Bank of America® banking customer, you’ll have the opportunity to earn a points dividend of 25%, 50% or 75% through the Preferred Rewards program. The bonus you’ll receive depends on the type of account you have and the total amount of your assets. But even if you don’t qualify for Preferred Rewards status, just having a Bank of America® checking or savings account will give you a boost: You’ll get a 10% dividend on the points you earn.

Another way to earn extra points is to book your travel through the Bank of America® Travel Center. When you book travel through this site (which will allow you to choose from over 200 airlines and 10,000 hotels and resorts) and pay with your BankAmericard Travel Rewards® credit card, you’ll earn 3 points per dollar spent on eligible travel purchases.

Earning extra rewards doesn’t have to be a hassle. Bank of America® makes it easy to rack up points in a hurry.

Where the BankAmericard Travel Rewards® credit card falls short

The BankAmericard Travel Rewards® credit card is great in a lot of ways, but it’s not the only show in town. Depending on your spending and banking patterns, another card might suit your needs better.

Barclaycard Arrival Plus Credit Card
Learn More
For example, if you’re a big spender and are looking for a flexible, high-rewards travel credit card, you’re probably going to get a better value from a card like the Barclaycard Arrival Plus™ World Elite MasterCard®. With the Barclaycard Arrival Plus™ World Elite MasterCard®, you’ll earn 2 miles per dollar spent. You’ll also get 5% of your miles back when you redeem. As with the BankAmericard Travel Rewards® credit card, you can redeem your miles for any travel expense as a statement credit.

Many people balk at the Barclaycard Arrival Plus™ World Elite MasterCard®’s annual fee: $0 for the first year, then $89. But if you’re charging at least $1,250 per month, the card’s higher rewards rate makes it a better value than the BankAmericard Travel Rewards® credit card.

Capital One Quicksilver Credit Card

It’s also worth noting that there are some cards that will give you the same base rewards rate as the BankAmericard Travel Rewards® credit card with the added simplicity of a cash-back program. For example, the Capital One® Quicksilver® Cash Rewards Credit Card provides unlimited 1.5% cash back on all purchases, all the time. Like the BankAmericard Travel Rewards® credit card, the Capital One® Quicksilver® Cash Rewards Credit Card charges no foreign transaction fees and has an annual fee of $0.

Again, Capital One® Quicksilver® Cash Rewards Credit Card doesn’t beat out the BankAmericard Travel Rewards® credit card in terms of rewards, but if the versatility of those reward is your primary concern, it’s a card worth considering.

Who should consider the BankAmericard Travel Rewards® credit card?

The BankAmericard Travel Rewards® credit card offers a good travel rewards program for people who are looking for value but don’t want to have to fuss with special methods of earning and redeeming points.

The Nerds particularly like this card for busy travelers who want to book cheap tickets while still being able use credit card rewards, as well as people who already have a Bank of America® checking or savings account, because this makes it easy to capitalize on the annual 10% customer points bonus on total purchases. If you fit into either (or both) of these categories, go for it!
