Southwest Cards’ Sign-Up Bonuses Soar to Potential 60K Points

Many or all of the products featured here are from our partners who compensate us. This influences which products we write about and where and how the product appears on a page. However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list of our partners and here's how we make money.

This limited-time offer of up to 60,000 points on Southwest Airlines' consumer credit cards expired in October 2019, so this page is out of date. See our details pages for the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card, the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card and the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card for the current offers.

Southwest has elevated the potential sign-up bonus on all of its co-branded personal credit cards, allowing new cardholders to earn up to 60,000 Rapid Rewards points.

The new offer is available on the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card, the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card and the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card, and is phrased as follows for all three:

Earn up to 60,000 points. Earn 40,000 points after you spend $1,000 on purchases in the first 3 months your account is open. Plus, earn 20,000 points after you spend $12,000 on purchases in the first 12 months your account is open.

The previous offer, featured on all three cards, was for 40,000 points after spending $1,000 on purchases in the first three months, but there was no opportunity to earn the additional 20,000 points.

The three consumer cards have different annual fees, but the same ongoing rewards structure:

  • 2 points per $1 spent on Southwest® and Rapid Rewards hotel and car rental partner purchases.

  • 1 point per $1 spent on all other purchases.

Southwest generally offers similar limited-time sign-up bonus boosts to new cardholders throughout the year. Such offers can get you closer to earning a coveted Southwest Companion Pass, which lets you choose someone to fly for free with you (less taxes and fees) when you buy or redeem points for a flight.

A Companion Pass is good from the time you earn it through the next full calendar year, but you must earn 110,000 Rapid Rewards points in a calendar year to snag one. A 60,000-point sign-up bonus gets you more than halfway there. (In 2020, the points requirement increases to 125,000.)
