Saving money online is all about strategy.

Here’s how to lay claim to the best online coupon codes in three easy steps: search, select and score.

1. Search

There’s no excuse for purchasing something online without first looking for a coupon code.

“It should be a step that everyone is taking before they finish checking out,” says Jenny Martin of frugal living website Southern Savers.

“You may have gone to the website not because of the deal, but the minute you hit that checkout screen and you see a box that says promo code, you need to go on the hunt for a code to put in that box.”

Start with a simple Google search, Martin suggests. Try the name of the store plus the words “coupon” or “coupon codes.” A variety of coupon aggregator websites will pop up.

If you prefer to bargain hunt on your phone, coupon apps like CouponCabin are another helpful resource. These compile coupons and coupons codes at your fingertips.

2. Select

Your discount search may yield a coupon code — or two or three.

Some websites allow shoppers to stack multiple coupon codes on the same order, according to Martin. That might mean you can redeem a free shipping code and a 20%-off code at the same time.

If you’re limited to one coupon code, Martin says a percentage-off deal should almost always trump free shipping.

If you’re limited to one coupon code, Martin says a percentage-off deal should almost always trump free shipping.

“A free shipping code might be saving you $7 or $8, but the 20% or 30% coupon is probably going to save you a lot more than $7 or $8,” Martin says. “Always look for the total off coupon first if you’re only allowed one.”

Check out the coupon code policies at a few popular stores:

  • Bath & Body Works: Only one code can be applied per order.
  • Kohl’s: There is a maximum of four offer codes per order.
  • Victoria’s Secret: There is a maximum of three codes per order.

3. Score

Once you select your code or codes, input them in the box at checkout and ensure they’re applied to your order before you enter your payment information. Plug in different combinations of codes to see which will yield the greatest savings.

Most coupon codes are available online only, but if you’re shopping at a store, it’s still worth looking up the retailer’s online offers to see if they’re better than the current in-store coupons.

Martin says some stores have a kiosk that allows you to place an online order while you’re in the store and take advantage of the online coupon code.
