Based on these ratings, Allstate is among NerdWallet’s best renters insurance companies.
Allstate renters insurance coverage
An Allstate renters insurance policy includes the standard coverage you’d expect, including personal property coverage for your belongings, and liability and medical payments coverage in case someone is injured in your home. Allstate will also cover additional living expenses (such as hotel and restaurant bills) if you have to move out because of damage from a disaster covered in your policy. In most states, there’s no dollar cap on this coverage, though a 12-month limit may apply.
You can also add the following coverage options to your policy:
- Scheduled personal property, which covers expensive individual items such as jewelry or electronics that aren’t sufficiently insured by the standard policy.
- Identity theft coverage.
Allstate renters insurance discounts
You may be able to lower your renters insurance premium with the following discounts, depending on where you live:
- Multi-policy discount.
- Autopay discount.
- Claim-free discount.
- Discount for safety devices or services, such as fire alarms or security systems.
- Discount for retired policyholders who are at least 55 years old.
Allstate complaints and customer satisfaction
Allstate had fewer than the expected number of home insurance complaints to state regulators relative to its size, according to three years’ worth of data from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. (The NAIC’s home insurance complaints cover a range of policy types, including renters and condo insurance.)
However, the company had a slightly lower than average rating for customer satisfaction in a 2020 J.D. Power home insurance study.
