About ePremium renters insurance

If you’ve heard of ePremium Insurance, the company has probably partnered with your rental community to help you meet your renters insurance requirement. But is the most convenient option the best?

The answer: It depends. EPremium offers appealing options you might not see elsewhere, such as bedbug coverage. And its rates are competitive. The company advertises renters insurance rates of $11 to $22 a month, in line with the national average of $13 a month.

But ePremium renters insurance has its drawbacks, such as a limited choice of deductibles in some locations. If you shop around, you may be able to find more flexible options for a similar price.

EPremium is an agency, not an insurance company. It will sell you a policy underwritten by another company such as Spinnaker, Century National or Praetorian.

Best for: People with poor credit and those looking for an easy way to meet their building’s renters insurance requirement.

Not ideal for: Those who want a choice of deductibles.

  • We make every effort to rate each company we review. However, we’re sometimes unable to provide a NerdWallet star rating for insurers that work with multiple third parties to underwrite their policies. That’s because the quality of the policy you get may vary depending on the coverage options, financial strength and other factors of each separate underwriting company.

Where ePremium stands out

No credit check. EPremium promises automatic approval without a credit check. If you have a spotty credit history, an ePremium plan may save you money. (In most states, renters with poor credit pay significantly more for insurance.)

Quick quotes. You can get a quote, choose coverage and buy a policy in a few minutes online.

Where ePremium falls short

Deductibles. ePremium may assign you different deductibles for different types of claims, such as wind and hail. (A deductible is the amount of a claim that you pay.) In our sample quotes, the assigned deductibles ranged from $250 to $1,000. If you’d have trouble coming up with $1,000 in an emergency, you might be better off with another company that lets you choose a lower deductible.

Discounts. Other than savings for paying your policy in full, upfront, ePremium doesn’t advertise any discounts.

What ePremium renters insurance covers

Landlords sometimes require tenants to buy a policy with a minimum amount of liability insurance, but otherwise, the coverage you choose is generally up to you. Below are the four types of coverage included in most standard renters policies:

  • Personal property coverage can replace belongings such as furniture and electronics if they're stolen or damaged.

  • Renters liability insurance pays out if you're responsible for injuring other people or damaging their property.

  • Loss of use coverage pays for hotel stays, meals or other expenses if you have to live elsewhere while your home is repaired.

  • Medical payments coverage pays to treat injuries to other people in your home, regardless of fault.

For more details, see What Does Renters Insurance Cover?

Policies may also include replacement cost coverage for your belongings. With this coverage, if your stuff is stolen or destroyed, you’ll get a high enough claim payout to buy brand-new items.

Some insurance companies cover your stuff on an “actual cash value” basis and pay only what your items are worth at the time of the claim. For older items, that could be a lot less than what it would cost to replace them.

Optional coverage

Depending on where you live, you may have the option to add these endorsements to your policy:

Identity fraud expense coverage. Pays expenses associated with recovering your identity.

Bedbug coverage. Pays to treat infestations in your home.

Pet damage. Pays to repair damage to your landlord’s property caused by your pet.

Water backup coverage. Pays if water backs up and damages your belongings.

Earthquake coverage. Pays for property damaged in an earthquake and for alternate lodging if you have to move out.

Flood insurance. Covers your belongings if they’re damaged by flooding. Learn more about flood insurance for renters.

Coverage for students away at school. If someone in your household is away at college or boarding school, this endorsement covers their belongings.

Discounts

You may be able to save by paying your premium in full, upfront, rather than in monthly installments.

Did you know...

Where you live can make a big difference in how much you pay for renters insurance. People in areas with higher crime rates or a greater risk of natural disasters tend to pay higher rates. Find the cheapest renters insurance.

How we review renters insurance

Our editorial team considers these factors when reviewing renters insurance companies:

  • This rating is based primarily on consumer complaints to state regulators, as reported by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. We also evaluate whether companies have customer-friendly features such as online claims filing and quotes.

  • We look at how companies cover your personal belongings and how many common optional endorsements they offer.

  • We evaluate the discounts a company offers and, when available, its median rates.

  • We use AM Best and Demotech ratings to confirm each insurer’s long-term financial stability and ability to pay claims.

Frequently asked questions

EPremium offers eDeposit, an alternative to a traditional security deposit. Instead of paying your community’s full security deposit, you’d buy eDeposit for a much lower price. You won't get that money back when you move out the way you would a traditional security deposit, but it can save you money on move-in costs.

Yes, you may be able to add several roommates to your policy, depending on where you live. Learn more about the pros and cons of sharing renters insurance with roommates.
