Travelers renters insurance coverage

Like most renters insurance companies, Travelers offers coverage for your belongings, personal liability and additional living expenses if you need to move out of your home during repairs for a covered claim.

Your policy also includes housing improvements coverage, which means if your landlord has let you make alterations or upgrades to your unit, these will be covered in case of theft or disaster, up to 10% of your personal property limit. That means that if your home were destroyed in a fire, for example, your belongings would be covered up to your personal property limit, and you would have the additional 10% to cover any upgraded features. (Higher limits are available for extra cost.)

Optional coverage you can add to your policy includes:

Replacement cost value. This upgrade to your personal property coverage means that if your belongings are stolen or destroyed, Travelers will reimburse enough for you to buy brand-new replacements, rather than paying you only for the current cash value of the items.

Valuable items coverage. Pricey items such as an engagement ring or a musical instrument may not be adequately insured by your normal policy limits, so you can add extra coverage as needed. An appraisal isn’t required.

Renters insurance ratings methodology

NerdWallet’s renters insurance ratings reward companies for customer-first features and practices. Ratings are based on weighted averages of scores in several categories, including financial strength, consumer complaints, coverage options, discounts, online experience and more. These ratings are a guide, but we encourage you to shop around and compare several insurance quotes to find the best rate for you. NerdWallet does not receive compensation for any reviews. Read our editorial guidelines.

Methodology: Insurer complaints

NerdWallet examined complaints received by state insurance regulators and reported to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners in 2018-2020. To assess how insurers compare to one another, the NAIC calculates a complaint index each year for each subsidiary, measuring its share of total complaints relative to its size, or share of total premiums in the industry. To evaluate a company’s complaint history, NerdWallet calculated a similar index for each insurer, weighted by market shares of each subsidiary, over the three-year period. Ratios are determined separately for auto, home (including renters and condo) and life insurance.
