Best appliance-only plan: Liberty Home Guard

NerdWallet rating: 5 out of 5 stars.

Why it's our editorial team's pick for appliance-only plans: Among the companies we researched, it covers the most appliances in a single, appliance-only plan. Its Appliance Guard plan covers kitchen appliances and more, including a clothes washer and dryer set, exhaust and ceiling fans, and a garbage disposal.

Who's this great for? Homeowners who want to cover only their appliances but aren't worried about ice makers.

Coverage details: Plans pay up to $2,000 for repairs for each appliance. Liberty Home Guard has a plan to cover just appliances, so you're not spending extra money to repair systems you don't want to cover. You can also add optional coverage for a second refrigerator and stand-alone freezer, but you'll pay an extra monthly fee.

Things to know: Liberty Home Guard doesn't repair refrigerator ice makers, even if your plan pays to repair your fridge; you have to pay extra for that coverage. The company also doesn't repair appliances with rust or corrosion damage.

Best customer satisfaction: Old Republic Home Protection

NerdWallet rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Why it's our editorial team's pick for customer satisfaction: Old Republic has the most consistent customer satisfaction record among the home warranty companies we’ve researched. The company has high marks on consumer review websites and an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, in part because of its response to customer issues.

Who's this great for? Customers who value good customer service above a plan that covers all of their kitchen appliances.

Coverage details: Old Republic covers the majority of major kitchen appliances with its Basic Plan, which is the cheapest option. The only appliance missing from the Basic Plan is a washer and dryer set. Coverage for refrigerators includes repairs to ice makers, and you can pay extra to cover a second refrigerator. Depending on the plan you choose, Old Republic will pay either $3,500 or $7,000 per appliance repair.

Things to know: Old Republic has only comprehensive plans and doesn’t offer an appliance-only plan. Additionally, the company is available in only 25 states and Washington, D.C.

» MORE: What does a home warranty cover?

Best for pricing: 2-10 Home Buyers Warranty

NerdWallet rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars.

Why it's our editorial team's pick for pricing: No matter where you live, you’ll pay the same price as other 2-10 Home Buyers customers. The company doesn’t change its price based on where you live (like some home warranty companies do), so you know you’re getting a fair price. And 2-10’s plans are reasonably priced compared to its competitors’ quotes.

Who's this great for? Customers who are on a budget and prefer a more affordable plan.

Coverage details: A bonus with 2-10’s consistent pricing is that it has an appliance-only plan, aptly called Kitchen Appliances, which starts at $35. The plan doesn’t include all major kitchen appliances, but it does cover ice makers, ice crushers and beverage dispensers in refrigerators. You can also buy extra coverage for a second refrigerator if you’re okay paying extra each month.

One uncommon feature is that 2-10 pays a different amount for each type of appliance repair: $2,000 for a refrigerator; $1,000 for a range, oven or cooktop; $500 for a dishwasher; and $500 for a built-in microwave. You can upgrade your package to increase total appliance coverage limits.

Things to know: Going with 2-10’s appliance-only plan means you won’t have coverage for a washer/dryer set, garbage disposal, ceiling fans, exhaust fans or garage door opener. Additionally, 2-10’s customer satisfaction scores are lower than some of its competitors’ scores on review websites.

NerdWallet's Editorial Team Picks for Best Overall Home Warranties

See which home warranties our writers and editors think are the best options for homeowners.

Clothing, Footwear, Shoe

Best for multiple refrigerators: American Home Shield

NerdWallet rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Why it's our editorial team's pick for multiple refrigerators: It's uncommon for home warranty plans to cover multiple refrigerators, but American Home Shield covers them in two of its three plans.

Who's this great for? Homes with second refrigerators in the garage for extra groceries or game-night beers.

Coverage details: The ShieldGold plan covers up to $2,000 per appliance, and the ShieldPlatinum plan, which costs more per month, covers up to $4,000 per appliance. Coverage includes ice makers, which isn't always covered by other companies. However, American Home Shield doesn't say how many fridges it'll cover — so our bet is on two refrigerators.

Things to know: American Home Shield doesn't have an appliance-only plan, and it doesn't include appliances in its cheapest plan, ShieldSilver. So you'll need to choose a more expensive plan to cover appliances. Keep in mind that coverage doesn't include stand-alone freezers, which are different from refrigerators.

Best for coverage limits: First American Home Warranty

NerdWallet rating: 3 out of 5 stars.

Why it's our editorial team's pick for coverage limits: First American Home Warranty pays $3,500 or $7,000, depending on your plan, to repair each appliance. Compared with its competitors, that’s a lot of coverage for appliances that might be used every day.

Who's this great for? Homeowners who want to get the most out of approved repairs and avoid maxing out coverage.

Coverage details: First American’s cheapest option, the Starter Plan, covers several — but not all — major kitchen appliances, including a dishwasher, microwave, oven/range/cooktop, garbage disposal and refrigerator with an ice maker. You can also add a second refrigerator to your plan for an additional monthly fee.

And because First American has only comprehensive plans that cover appliances and systems together, it’s a bonus that the company has no coverage caps on some systems as well. (Unlimited coverage doesn’t mean every claim will be approved for a repair.)

Things to know: You’ll have to pay more for the Essential Plan to add coverage for a washer and dryer set, garage door opener, ceiling fans and exhaust fans. And First American offers plans in only 36 states.

» MORE: Are home warranties worth it?

Best for optional coverage: Choice Home Warranty

NerdWallet rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Why it's our editorial team's pick for optional coverage: Choice Home Warranty’s add-on coverage lets customers tack on coverage for individual items that aren’t otherwise included in their plans. Choice’s optional coverage includes common items, such as freshwater pools, septic systems and well pumps. But it also offers coverage for items some of its competitors exclude, including sprinkler systems, stand-alone ice makers, stand-alone freezers and central vacuums.

Who's this great for? Homes with systems that are often excluded from home warranty plans, such as spas and sprinkler systems.

Coverage details: Choice doesn’t have an appliance-only plan. Its Basic Plan, which is the cheaper option, covers the majority of major kitchen appliances, such as a dishwasher, microwave and oven. But you’ll have to go with the more expensive Total Plan if you want coverage for your refrigerator and washer/dryer set. For appliances, Choice covers up to $3,000 per appliance for approved repairs.

Things to know: Like most home warranty companies, Choice charges an additional monthly fee for each optional item you add to your coverage. How much Choice will pay toward repairs depends on the add-on item and ranges from $250 to $3,000 for approved repairs per item. Additionally, the company offers consistent pricing but doesn’t have different service fee options.

Best workmanship guarantee: AFC Home Warranty

NerdWallet rating: 3 out of 5 stars.

Why it's our editorial team's pick for workmanship guarantee: AFC’s repair guarantee is the best we’ve come across yet. The company guarantees repairs it has already paid for until you end your home warranty agreement. In other words, if you keep renewing your home warranty every year, repair guarantees for everything except plumbing stoppages carry over into the next year.

Who's this great for? Homeowners who are worried about having to pay to repeat a repair months or years later.

Coverage details: AFC’s appliance-only plan, the Silver Plan, is its cheapest option. It covers most major kitchen appliances and a washer and dryer set. AFC pays up to $3,000 for repairs for most of the covered appliances, but some appliances have lower coverage limits. The company also has add-on coverage for stand-alone freezers.

Things to know: If you want to cover your microwave and ceiling and exhaust fans, you have to purchase the Platinum Plan. Because it includes more coverage than the Silver Plan, it’s more expensive. Coverage limits for microwaves and garage door openers are $500 each, and AFC will pay up to $150 for garbage disposal repairs.

Other companies we considered

These companies offer a variety of coverage but didn't make this year's list.

How much does an appliance home warranty cost?

An appliance-only home warranty plan ranges from $35 to $62 per month, according to the NerdWallet editorial team's research.

However, not all home warranty companies have appliance-only plans, and plans that combine coverage for appliances and systems tend to be more expensive. These comprehensive plans can range from $29.99 to $119.99, according to Nerdwallet’s analysis of home warranty prices. The average price of a home warranty plan in 2025 is $62.33.

What to know before buying a home warranty

Reading the coverage and exclusions information in your contract is one of the most impactful things you can do to avoid costly misunderstandings in the future. You have a right to read your contract before purchasing a plan, and it’s important to understand that home warranties:

  • Always have exclusions to coverage, no matter what their sales pitches say. Read your contract carefully before purchasing a plan — especially anything listed as an exclusion or limit of liability. For example, a company might cover air conditioning systems but exclude certain parts or components, such as coils. Other companies cover plumbing repairs but won’t pay to clear all plumbing stoppages or repair certain types of leaks.

  • Are not a type of insurance. Even though some companies call their service fees deductibles, home warranties do not work the same way as insurance policies. They differ in what they cover and how they pay for repairs or replacements. A home warranty is not a supplement for homeowners insurance.

  • Limit how much they pay. If the cost of a repair or replacement goes beyond a limit stated in your contract, you’ll have to pay the difference. For example, if the bill for a repair is $2,000 and the limit is $1,500, you’re required to cover $500. This is in addition to your monthly premium and service fee.

  • Can deny your claim for several reasons. Examples include if you had work performed on a covered item without approval or you modified the system or appliance.

  • May not pay enough to cover the full cost of replacing a covered item. Home warranties often depreciate the value of items as they age, so you’ll likely have to pay at least some money to replace an item, even if it’s covered by the contract.

Frequently asked questions

How we rate and review home warranties

Our Home Services team reviews home warranty companies with our readers in mind. We provide unbiased reviews that consider several factors, including cost, covered items, coverage limits, customer ratings, ability to choose your own technician and warranty on work completed. When rating home warranties, we researched 13 companies, compared terms and conditions in their service agreements and read customer reviews from three consumer review websites. While NerdWallet does have partnerships with some home warranty companies, our editorial team is uninvolved in that process to ensure unbiased reviews and recommendations. Read more about how NerdWallet rates home warranties.
