Things to know: Liberty Home Guard doesn't repair refrigerator ice makers, even if your plan pays to repair your fridge; you have to pay extra for that coverage. The company also doesn't repair appliances with rust or corrosion damage.

Coverage details: A bonus with 2-10’s consistent pricing is that it has an appliance-only plan, aptly called Kitchen Appliances, which starts at $35. The plan doesn’t include all major kitchen appliances, but it does cover ice makers, ice crushers and beverage dispensers in refrigerators. You can also buy extra coverage for a second refrigerator if you’re okay paying extra each month.

One uncommon feature is that 2-10 pays a different amount for each type of appliance repair: $2,000 for a refrigerator; $1,000 for a range, oven or cooktop; $500 for a dishwasher; and $500 for a built-in microwave. You can upgrade your package to increase total appliance coverage limits.

Things to know: Going with 2-10’s appliance-only plan means you won’t have coverage for a washer/dryer set, garbage disposal, ceiling fans, exhaust fans or garage door opener. Additionally, 2-10’s customer satisfaction scores are lower than some of its competitors’ scores on review websites.

Coverage includes ice makers, which isn't always covered by other companies. However, American Home Shield doesn't say how many fridges it'll cover — so our bet is on two refrigerators.

Things to know: American Home Shield doesn't have an appliance-only plan, and it doesn't include appliances in its cheapest plan, ShieldSilver. So you'll need to choose a more expensive plan to cover appliances. Keep in mind that coverage doesn't include stand-alone freezers, which are different from refrigerators.

You can also add a second refrigerator to your plan for an additional monthly fee.

And because First American has only comprehensive plans that cover appliances and systems together, it’s a bonus that the company has no coverage caps on some systems as well. (Unlimited coverage doesn’t mean every claim will be approved for a repair.)

Things to know: You’ll have to pay more for the Essential Plan to add coverage for a washer and dryer set, garage door opener, ceiling fans and exhaust fans. And First American offers plans in only 36 states.

Choice’s optional coverage includes common items, such as freshwater pools, septic systems and well pumps. But it also offers coverage for items some of its competitors exclude, including sprinkler systems, stand-alone ice makers, stand-alone freezers and central vacuums.

Coverage details: Choice doesn’t have an appliance-only plan. Its Basic Plan, which is the cheaper option, covers the majority of major kitchen appliances, such as a dishwasher, microwave and oven. But you’ll have to go with the more expensive Total Plan if you want coverage for your refrigerator and washer/dryer set. For appliances, Choice covers up to $3,000 per appliance for approved repairs.

Things to know: Like most home warranty companies, Choice charges an additional monthly fee for each optional item you add to your coverage. How much Choice will pay toward repairs depends on the add-on item and ranges from $250 to $3,000 for approved repairs per item. Additionally, the company offers consistent pricing but doesn’t have different service fee options.

Coverage details: AFC’s appliance-only plan, the Silver Plan, is its cheapest option. It covers most major kitchen appliances and a washer and dryer set. AFC pays up to $3,000 for repairs for most of the covered appliances, but some appliances have lower coverage limits. The company also has add-on coverage for stand-alone freezers.

Things to know: If you want to cover your microwave and ceiling and exhaust fans, you have to purchase the Platinum Plan. Because it includes more coverage than the Silver Plan, it’s more expensive. Coverage limits for microwaves and garage door openers are $500 each, and AFC will pay up to $150 for garbage disposal repairs.
