The Bottom Line

5.0

NerdWallet rating

It guarantees at least one companion fare annually. Add to that its uncommon bonus category of "foreign purchases," its low-hassle travel delay credit, and its multiple travel partners, and you have a card unlike most in its class.

Detailed Review

At first glance, Alaska Airlines' $395-annual-fee Atmos™ Rewards Summit Visa Infinite® credit card may seem similar to other premium airline cards, with its lounge access, generous checked-bag benefit, and other now-familiar perks for its category.

But the card breaks away from its competitors thanks to a variety of innovative features, most notably a companion award benefit that's far more flexible and expansive than the one offered by its less-expensive sibling, the Atmos™ Rewards Ascent Visa Signature® credit card (formerly known as the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® credit card).

And the unique perks don't stop there: The Atmos™ Rewards Summit Visa Infinite® credit card also features an automatic travel delay credit with few spending restrictions, not to mention a bonus category that's as potentially lucrative as it is rare: "foreign purchases." And unlike other airline cards that lately feel like expensive coupon books, this card features some highly useful credits that are fairly painless to snag.

For frequent Alaska (and Hawaiian) flyers, the card has a lot of valuable perks that justify its triple-digit annual fee.

🤓Nerdy Tip

In 2025, Alaska’s Mileage Plan and Hawaiian’s HawaiianMiles loyalty programs merged under a new name, Atmos Rewards. The rewards currency changed from miles to points, but the value of those points stayed the same. What were known as elite-qualifying miles (EQMs) are now called status points.

How the two Atmos Rewards cards differ

The Atmos™ Rewards Summit Visa Infinite® credit card is the more expensive of Alaska Airlines' two consumer credit cards and, as such, offers more robust benefits. But its less costly sibling — the Atmos™ Rewards Ascent Visa Signature® credit card — isn't exactly a slouch when it comes to perks either.

Benefits and Perks

Global Companion Awards

With the Atmos™ Rewards Summit Visa Infinite® credit card, you can get at least one — and potentially two — Global Companion Awards per year, allowing you to fly a traveling companion for free.

Cardholders automatically receive a 25,000-point Global Companion Award every account anniversary. But you can earn another one worth up to 100,000 points by spending $60,000 in an anniversary year. Both awards are applied as a discount to the total points price of a flight and may be redeemed for any service class on any flight in Alaska’s network, including flights with Hawaiian Airlines, Oneworld Alliance members and other eligible international partners. That means you could put the award toward a more costly flight and use additional Atmos points to take care of the rest of the price.

🤓Nerdy Tip

The Global Companion Award differs from the well-known Companion Fare benefit on the less-expensive Atmos™ Rewards Ascent Visa Signature® credit card. While the 25,000-point Global Companion Award is an automatic benefit each year, the Companion Fare on the Ascent must be earned by spending $6,000 on the card within the prior anniversary year, and it can be used only on economy flights. To fly someone with the Companion Fare, you’ll still have to pay a flat $99 plus taxes and fees.

Welcome offer, plus interesting ongoing rewards

New cardholders can earn the following welcome bonus: Earn 100,000 bonus points and a 25,000-point Global Companion Award with this offer. To qualify, spend $6,000 or more on purchases within the first 90 days of opening your account.

Redemptions start at 4,500 for a one-way economy ticket, so the bonus could get you several free flights.

On top of that, the card features useful bonus categories beyond just flights with Alaska Airlines. You get a solid rate back on dining, plus the unique category of "foreign transactions," which is ideal for frequent international travelers and could cover a lot of spending ground.

Flight perks

The Atmos™ Rewards Summit Visa Infinite® credit card boasts a raft of perks meant to make travel more affordable and comfortable. Cardholders get:

  • Eight Alaska lounge passes per year (two per quarter). One pass grants lounge access to one adult and up to two children under 21.

  • Waived award ticket fees. Save up to $25 per person on every round-trip flight when using points to book with a partner airline.

  • Eight in-flight Wi-Fi vouchers per year. Vouchers will be issued to premium cardmembers until Starlink WiFi is installed on the entire Alaska fleet. Once all planes have Starlink, all Atmos Rewards members will receive free in-flight Wi-Fi.

  • Free checked bags. This perk applies to the cardholder and up to six guests on the same reservation on any Alaska and Hawaiian flight.

Travel credits

The card offers a $120 credit for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry application fees every four years, a fairly common perk among premium travel cards. Its $50 travel delay credit, on the other hand, is the first of its kind.

Cardholders will automatically receive a $50 voucher sent to their card if their flight is delayed more than two hours or cancelled within 24 hours of scheduled departure. The $50 voucher is only valid for 48 hours; any remaining amount will be forfeited. Cardholders who need to reschedule same-day flights receive waived change fees.

Access to transfer partners

With the Atmos™ Rewards Summit Visa Infinite® credit card, you’ll gain access to several hotel transfer partners. Points earned with the card transfer at the following ratios:

  • Marriott: 1:1.

  • IHG: 1:1.

  • Wyndham: 1:1

  • Preferred Hotels: 1:2.

  • Shangri-La: 8:1.

Fast track to status

Status within the Atmos Rewards loyalty program is easier to attain by holding the Atmos™ Rewards Summit Visa Infinite® credit card. Cardholders will receive 10,000 status points every account anniversary, plus 1 status point for every $2 spent on the card.

Drawbacks and Considerations

High annual fee

A $395 annual fee may be prohibitive for some travelers. Yes, you can make up for that fee by using the card’s perks and credits, but many of them aren’t automatic — you’ll need to remember to use them.

Limited footprint

Alaska mostly flies to cities on the West Coast, plus a handful of international destinations. (The same is true of Hawaiian Airlines.) The card's points are versatile and its Global Companion Award feature can still be useful, especially if you're willing to research and leverage the airline's various partners. But if Alaska doesn't service your local airport, it's worth thinking twice about how much work it might take to fully enjoy this card's lengthy list of perks.

How To Decide If It's Right For You

Frequent Alaska fliers will get the most benefit from the Atmos™ Rewards Summit Visa Infinite® credit card. For those who fly Alaska only occasionally, or who balk at a three-digit annual fee, you still have options. Consider instead the more affordable Atmos™ Rewards Ascent Visa Signature® credit card, or even a $0-annual-fee general travel card such as the Wells Fargo Autograph® Card.

alt
Alternate Pick: Flexible redemption options
2x miles on purchases

With this card, miles can be redeemed in a variety of ways. Rewards have the most value when redeemed for travel in Capital One’s portal or transferred to one of Capital One’s hotel or airline partners. The card also comes with a $120 credit for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry.

Methodology

NerdWallet reviews credit cards with an eye toward both the quantitative and qualitative features of a card. Quantitative features are those that boil down to dollars and cents, such as fees, interest rates, rewards (including earning rates and redemption values) and the cash value of benefits and perks. Qualitative factors are those that affect how easy or difficult it is for a typical cardholder to get good value from the card. They include such things as the ease of application, simplicity of the rewards structure, the likelihood of using certain features, and whether a card is well-suited to everyday use or is best reserved for specific purchases. Our star ratings serve as a general gauge of how each card compares with others in its class, but star ratings are intended to be just one consideration when a consumer is choosing a credit card.
