Founded in 1979, the Boston-based Safety Insurance Company offers auto, homeowners and other insurance products to customers in select New England states. If you want the personal attention of an agent and you’re a resident of Massachusetts, New Hampshire or Maine, Safety Insurance might be right for you.

Safety auto insurance coverage

In addition to standard types of auto insurance such as comprehensive, collision and liability coverage, Safety also offers optional coverage, including:

Safety Shield. The coverage in this package varies depending on your state, but it may include extras such as glass coverage, a waiver of the collision deductible, guaranteed replacement cost, emergency road travel expenses and coverage for personal belongings.

Safety Shield Plus. Available only in Massachusetts, this includes everything in the Safety Shield package plus accident forgiveness, additional coverage for your personal items, seat belt coverage, bail bonds and coverage for pets injured in an accident.

Gap coverage. This optional add-on will pay the difference between your car’s value and the balance on your lease or loan if your car is totaled or stolen. You’ll typically need to purchase comprehensive and collision coverage, which pay up only to the car’s value, to buy gap insurance.

Auto insurance discounts

Safety’s auto insurance discounts vary by state, but may include:

  • Accident-free discount.

  • Multiple-car discount.

  • Multiple-policy discount.

  • Good student discount.

  • Loyalty discount.

  • Discount for students away at school.

  • Discount for drivers who have their policy issued electronically.

  • Discount for drivers who take a crash-prevention course.

  • Discount for using the company’s Drive with Safety app.

Pricing based on tracked driving habits

Drivers who install the Drive with Safety telematics app on their smartphone may qualify for an auto insurance discount. The app scores drivers based on tracked driving behaviors like hard braking, speeding, driving late at night and using your phone while driving.

Auto insurance buying guide

Before you compare car insurance companies, you’ll need to collect some basic information. This includes the driving history of everyone who will be on the policy, as well as facts about your car, such as safety features and annual mileage driven. You’ll also want to determine which types of coverage you need. For example, do you want only the bare minimum insurance that your state requires, or do you need more extensive coverage, such as gap insurance or rideshare coverage? Check that each company you’re considering has the options you want.

When comparing rates among insurers, make sure each is offering the same coverage limits and deductibles. You may not want to make your decision based on price alone. Look at how many consumer complaints each company has, as a high number of complaints could be a red flag about the quality of service you'll receive.

Depending on which company you choose, you may be able to buy insurance online, over the phone or through an agent. For more guidance, see how to get car insurance.

Safety home insurance coverage

Safety Insurance offers standard coverage for homes, condos and apartments, including for damage due to fire, windstorms and theft.

Safety also offers cyber protection for Massachusetts and New Hampshire residents, which covers damaged software, compromised data and other technology issues.

You can bolster coverage with optional upgrade packages such as:

Safety Supreme includes higher limits for jewelry and silverware, an extra $100,000 of liability coverage, water and sewer back up coverage up to $2,000, and ordinance or law coverage. It also includes replacement cost coverage for your home and personal belongings, which pays to replace damaged or stolen items with new ones, rather than paying the estimated value.

Safety Supreme Plus includes everything in the Safety Supreme package, plus extra water and sewer backup coverage and service line coverage up to $10,000. This package also includes guaranteed replacement cost, which will pay the full price to rebuild your home even if it’s above your policy limit.

Safety Complete includes everything in the Supreme Plus package along with identity theft reimbursement, increased limits for water and sewer backup, and coverage for a business property on the premises. It’ll also pay up to $50,000 if appliances like your refrigerator or HVAC system break down.

Home insurance discounts

Safety’s home insurance discounts vary by state and may include:

  • Multiple-policy discount.

  • Discount for homeowners who have their policy issued electronically.

  • New home credit.

  • Loyalty credit.

  • Credit for fire or burglar alarms.

Complaints and customer satisfaction

Methodology

Insurer complaints methodology

NerdWallet examined complaints received by state insurance regulators and reported to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners in 2018-2020. To assess how insurers compare to one another, the NAIC calculates a complaint index each year for each subsidiary, measuring its share of total complaints relative to its size, or share of total premiums in the industry. To evaluate a company’s complaint history, NerdWallet calculated a similar index for each insurer, weighted by market shares of each subsidiary, over the three-year period. Ratios are determined separately for auto, home (including renters and condo) and life insurance. Read our editorial guidelines.

Auto insurance ratings methodology

Ratings are based on weighted averages of scores in several categories, including financial strength, consumer complaints and discounts. Our “ease of use” category looks at factors such as website transparency and how easy it is to file a claim. Using our editorial discretion, we also consider customer satisfaction surveys. These ratings are a guide, but we encourage you to shop around and compare several insurance quotes to find the best rate for you. NerdWallet does not receive compensation for any reviews.
