According to NerdWallet’s Travel Price Tracker, vacation costs are up 11% this summer versus last have continued to climb dramatically, forcing many travelers to rethink how they spend. In fact, a significant portion of summer travelers carry credit card debt just to fund their trips. If you and your partner want to get away on a budget (and without going into debt), you'll need to choose your destination wisely.
Fortunately, there are plenty of highly romantic getaways that help you cut costs without sacrificing that romantic getaway. Here are six versatile vacation ideas for couples to spark your wanderlust.
For a romantic domestic getaway rich in history, architecture and music, New Orleans is tough to beat. The city is highly walkable, allowing you to wander through the French Quarter or admire the historic mansions of the Garden District completely for free.
Couples can enjoy a slow-paced morning sharing a plate of hot, powdered-sugar-dusted beignets at the historic Cafe Du Monde for just a few dollars, and then hop on the iconic streetcars to traverse the city for a nominal fare.
Even during busier months, boutique hotels and historic inns scattered throughout the French Quarter remain highly competitive, offering beautiful courtyards and romantic ambiances that won't break the bank. In the evenings, you can skip expensive concert tickets and simply stroll down Frenchmen Street, where world-class live jazz spills out onto the sidewalks for the price of a local drink or a tip to the street performers.
If staying in a cozy alpine cabin or mountain lodge is your speed, the region surrounding Lake Tahoe offers pristine alpine waters and dramatic mountain views. While Tahoe is notoriously expensive in the winter due to costly lift tickets, it transforms into an incredibly affordable haven in the summer.
Instead of paying high fees for winter ski passes, summer visitors can take advantage of the mountains for free or cheap. Many ski resorts open their lifts for scenic rides; for example, Northstar California offers affordable summer lift tickets that take you straight to high-altitude hiking trails with sweeping views. You can also bring your own roller or ice skates to use their village rink entirely for free.

As far as other ways to save:
Head to Truckee: Skip the pricey lakefront hotels and stay about 30 minutes away in the historic town of Truckee. It's much more affordable and sits right next to Donner Lake, where public docks can be accessed for just a small parking fee — or completely free if you park along the designated roadside spots.
Bring your own gear: Pack your own kayaks, paddleboards or inner tubes to float along Donner Lake, or bring your own bike to pedal down the Truckee River Legacy Trail without paying steep hourly rental fees.
3. Taipei, Taiwan

For couples seeking an international adventure that offers massive value, Taiwan is a budget traveler's paradise. While the transpacific flight requires some planning, your day-to-day costs upon arrival are remarkably low compared to Western or European destinations.
Taipei is incredibly safe, clean and romantic, packed with winding night markets, historic temples and accessible mountain hiking trails just a subway ride from downtown.

The crown jewel of a budget trip to Taipei is its world-famous food scene. You can eat like royalty for just a few dollars per meal. Michelin-recommended breakfast joints, like the legendary Fu Hang Soy Milk, offer incredible local staples like savory soy milk and freshly baked sesame flatbreads for nominal prices.
🤓Nerdy Tip
The lines at Fu Hang Soy Milk get exceptionally long, wrap around the block and can eat up hours of your morning. To beat the crowds, wake up early and book your stay right next door at the Hilton Resonance Taipei, which is part of The Tapestry Collection by Hilton. It’s an ideal place to burn your Hilton Honors points for a luxury stay while keeping you steps away from a world-class breakfast before the morning rush.
4. Mauritius

If you and your partner have your hearts set on a tropical, white-sand beach vacation but find yourself reeling from the sticker shock of the Maldives or Bora Bora, look toward Mauritius.
Sitting off the coast of East Africa in the Indian Ocean, this island nation delivers the exact same postcard-perfect turquoise waters, volcanic backdrops and luxury resort amenities at a fraction of the cost. Because the local economy and resort structures cater to a wider variety of travelers, you can book stunning beachfront accommodations such as the One&Only Le Saint Géran. Food has Indian influences with a heavy emphasis on seafood. Activities including exploring coral reefs, hiking waterfalls and exploring local markets.
It’s the ultimate "dupe" destination for couples who want high-end romance on a sensible budget.
5. Adult-focused cruising

Many couples overlook cruising because they assume it’s either too expensive or too crowded with families. However, when you break down the numbers, a cruise is often far more economical than a traditional land vacation. A standard hotel booking only covers your room, but a cruise includes your transportation between destinations, your lodging, your daily entertainment and all your meals. You don't have to worry about booking multiple train tickets, paying surge pricing for cabs or hunting down pricey restaurants in city centers.
To keep the romance alive without the chaos of giant waterslides and hundreds of kids, opt for lines like Holland America Line or Princess Cruises, which cater heavily to adults looking for a more tranquil, refined atmosphere but are more affordable than purely adults-only lines, which tend to have an ultra-luxury bent.
The Alaska route:Alaska cruises are ideal for nature-loving couples who want to see massive glaciers, misty fjords and coastal wildlife without the logistical headache of planning a remote road trip.
The Mediterranean route: An incredibly efficient way to knock off multiple bucket-list European cities like stopping in Rome, Florence and Barcelona, a Mediterranean cruise lets you see it all on a single itinerary without unpacking your bags more than once.
6. Hong Kong

If you love the hyper-efficient, vibrant energy of East Asia but want a destination that perfectly balances urban grit with high-end luxury romance, Hong Kong deserves a spot on your list. Often thought of as purely a high-priced financial hub, Hong Kong is surprisingly budget-friendly if you leverage a few smart city perks and kind of feels like Asia's version of New York City.
Getting around is incredibly cheap. For less than a dollar, you and your partner can board the historic Star Ferry to cruise across Victoria Harbour at sunset, taking in one of the most famous skylines in the world. For panoramic views, skip the tour buses and ride the historic double-decker ding-ding trams through Hong Kong Island, or hike up to Victoria Peak via the scenic green trails for free. The local culinary scene is equally accessible; you can share Michelin-starred dim sum at world-renowned, no-frills spots for a remarkably low bill.
When it's time to retreat from the bustle, you can still experience top-tier luxury without the astronomical price tags of old-school heritage hotels.

Romantic hotels that aren't completely unaffordable include The Hari Hong Kong, which is located right on the border of the energetic Wan Chai and Causeway Bay neighborhoods and has a rather hip bar on its patio deck as well as its own lobby art gallery. Best of all, it frequently prices out at a highly competitive rate compared to the surrounding mega-chains, and it can be even more affordable for American Express cardmembers who take advantage of booking through The Hotel Collection.
Affordable vacations for couples are within reach
With travelers feeling the pinch of inflation for day-to-day goods, planning ahead for a romantic but affordable vacation is that much more essential. Whether you and your partner are looking to relax and unplug, or seek out new experiences and adventure together, one of the destinations above is likely a fit.
