About Figo pet insurance

Figo earned 4.4 stars out of 5 for overall performance thanks to customizable accident and illness plans that come with plenty of perks. For example, the company may reduce your deductible by $50 each year you go without filing a claim.

Figo has a useful app with features to help manage your pet’s wellbeing. You can use it to set up health reminders, chat with a veterinarian 24/7 and file claims.

The company can cover orthopedic conditions, prescription medication, non-routine dental treatment, cancer therapies and much more. However, Figo won’t cover prescription food or sick exam fees unless you upgrade your plan. Supplements are never covered, and accident-only coverage isn’t available.

Figo partners with Costco, whose members may be eligible for a discount on their policy.

Figo at a glance

Best for: Pet owners who want 100% of their vet expenses reimbursed, and Costco members looking for a discount.

Not ideal for: Those who want an accident-only plan or coverage for supplements.

Figo plan options

Deductibles: A pet insurance deductible is the amount of your vet bills you need to pay before the insurer starts reimbursing you. Figo’s annual deductibles generally range from $100 to $1,500. Not all options may be available to all pets.

Reimbursement amounts: You can typically choose to be reimbursed for 70%, 80%, 90% or 100% of your vet expenses after you’ve reached your deductible.. The 100% option is a rare offering in the pet insurance industry.

Coverage limits: Pet owners can choose from annual coverage limits of $5,000, $10,000 or unlimited.

Restrictions and waiting periods

Age restrictions: Pets must be at least 8 weeks old to enroll. Unlike some pet insurers, Figo has no upper age limits.

Waiting periods: A pet insurance waiting period is the time between the date you buy your policy and the date that coverage starts. Figo’s waiting periods vary by state. In some cases, you may be able to waive a waiting period by having your vet examine your dog and complete the company’s waiver form.

Mobile app: The Figo Pet Cloud app lets you store your pet’s medical records, view policy information, file claims, and set health reminders. One nice feature is the ability to track your pet with Figo’s pet tags in case they ever get lost. You can also use the app to find pet-friendly local restaurants and connect with pet owners in your area. The app offers 24/7 access to a veterinarian through its live chat tool.

Claims

You can file a claim online, through the Figo app, over the phone, by email or via fax. Figo typically processes claims within 30 days. You can monitor the status of each claim in the Pet Cloud app or web portal.

Figo applies the reimbursement rate to your eligible vet expenses before it subtracts your deductible. That leads to a slightly less generous payout than companies that subtract the deductible first.

Here’s how the math would work if you had a $1,000 vet bill, 80% reimbursement and a $100 deductible.

How Figo calculates claim payouts: Reimbursement rate first

  • $1,000 vet bill x 0.8 (80% reimbursement rate) = $800.

  • $800 - $100 deductible = $700 reimbursement.

How much you pay: $300.

How some other insurers calculate claim payouts: Deductible first

  • $1,000 vet bill - $100 deductible = $900.

  • $900 x 0.8 (80% reimbursement rate) = $720 reimbursement.

How much you pay: $280.

Figo pet insurance vs. competitors

Here’s how Figo stacks up against three other popular pet insurance companies.

Figo vs. Healthy Paws

Company

Figo

Healthy Paws

NerdWallet star rating

Policy highlight

Mobile app has lots of useful features.

Processes many claims within two days.

The biggest differences between Figo and Healthy Paws are:

Coverage. Compared to Figo, Healthy Paws pet insurance offers fewer coverage options to choose from. It doesn’t offer a wellness package. Nor does it have the option to cover exam fees, prescription diets or behavioral modification — all things Figo can cover.

Options for older pets. Healthy Paws also won’t insure pets age 14 and up, while Figo has no upper age limit. Healthy Paws covers hip dysplasia only for pets under 6 years old at the time of enrollment.

Unique features. Healthy Paws offers the option to pay your vet directly, a convenient service Figo doesn’t provide. But it doesn’t have a 100% reimbursement option for all vet expenses like Figo does.

Figo vs. Trupanion

Company

Figo

Trupanion

NerdWallet star rating

Policy highlight

Mobile app has lots of useful features.

Unlimited coverage for all pets.

The main differences between Figo and Trupanion are:

Deductibles. The way Trupanion’s deductible works in most states is unique. Like most pet insurers, Figo has an annual deductible that applies to all accidents or illnesses in a given year. Trupanion’s deductibles apply to individual conditions and don’t reset each year. That means if your dog needs regular medication, you’ll only need to pay the deductible for that medication once, as opposed to once per year with Figo.

Wellness coverage. Trupanion doesn’t offer wellness coverage, so it won’t pay for things like parasite control, vaccines, or getting your pet spayed or neutered. Figo offers wellness coverage as an optional add-on.

Figo vs. Nationwide

Company

Figo

Nationwide

NerdWallet star rating

Policy highlight

Mobile app has lots of useful features.

Covers dogs, cats, birds, rabbits and other pets.

The key differences between Figo and Nationwide are:

Reimbursement for vet bills. Figo’s plan can reimburse up to 100% of your vet bills after you've met your deductible. Meanwhile, Nationwide’s plans offer anywhere from 50% to 80% reimbursement.

Pets covered. Both Figo and Nationwide insure dogs and cats, but Nationwide can also cover rabbits, guinea pigs and other “exotic” pets.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, Figo covers hip dysplasia. Depending on where you live, there may be an extended waiting period before coverage for orthopedic issues begins. You may be able to waive this waiting period with a vet exam.

Figo may cover non-routine dental treatment if it’s related to an injury or illness. Your pet must have no history of periodontal disease and get the dental care your vet recommends. Figo doesn’t pay for preventive or routine cleaning unless you add wellness coverage. Learn more about pet dental insurance.
