The Business Platinum Card® from American Express offers tremendous benefits that travelers love. The card earns 5x miles on flights and hotels booked through AmEx Travel. Plus, cardholders receive Gold status from Hilton and Marriott along with access to over 1,200 airport lounges worldwide. Enrollment required. Terms apply.
But the reason I love The Business Platinum Card® from American Express is the power and flexibility of its Membership Rewards points. Here are some of my favorite ways to redeem the points earned from its welcome bonus, which is offered like this: Earn 120,000 Membership Rewards® points after you spend $15,000 on eligible purchases with the Business Platinum Card within the first 3 months of Card Membership. Terms Apply.
1. Fly to Europe in economy class for 27,500 points each way
Europe is a great destination that offers incredible experiences among the many countries there. You can visit the Louvre in Paris, dine on pasta in Italy or savor wine and cheese in France. Instead of paying 30,000 miles each way on American Airlines, you can save points by using American Express Membership Rewards points.
That's because Membership Rewards transfer to Singapore Airlines at a 1:1 ratio. You can book economy class flights to Europe on Star Alliance partners like United, Lufthansa and SAS for only 27,500 miles each way.
Saving 2,500 points may not sound like much, but that is 5,000 miles per round-trip. For a family of four, the savings on a European vacation comes close to paying for another one-way flight.
2. ANA business class to Tokyo for 85,000 miles round-trip
Flying across the Pacific Ocean in business class is a treat you won't soon forget. In Japan, you can discover the history of samurai, take a bullet train, or admire the cherry blossoms.
Transfer 85,000 Membership Rewards points to All Nippon Airways (ANA) and redeem them for a round-trip business class ticket from the U.S. (Membership Rewards points transfer to ANA at a 1:1 ratio.)
3. Round-trip to Hawaii for 35,000 miles in economy class
Hawaii is a tropical paradise that Americans can travel to without needing a passport. However, tickets can be expensive even with the introduction of Southwest flights from the West Coast. Delta flies several routes to Hawaii and is a transfer partner of Membership Rewards. However, redeeming Delta SkyMiles for a flight to Hawaii is not your best option.
Instead, look to Delta's SkyTeam partner Flying Blue. Flights start at just 35,000 Flying Blue miles round-trip in economy class. The Flying Blue loyalty program is a 1:1 transfer partner of Membership Rewards.
4. Economy flights to Mexico for 29,000 miles round-trip
Mexico is one of the destinations Americans turn to when they want some fun in the sun. This is especially true during the winter; as temperatures dip, the beach looks even more inviting.
With round-trip flights to Mexico from the U.S. at 29,000 Flying Blue miles, there's no excuse not to book a winter escape to thaw out. To book these flights, transfer Membership Rewards points to Flying Blue at a 1:1 ratio.
5. Delta One Suites to Europe for 50,000 miles one-way
The Delta One Suites are a lush oasis in the sky. In addition to the standard lie-flat seats and premium meals, passengers also enjoy Westin Heavenly bedding and doors that slide shut for privacy. These tickets can cost hundreds of thousands of miles each way. Instead of spending a ludicrous amount of miles, book your Delta flight using Virgin Atlantic miles.
You can book Delta One Suites using Virgin Atlantic miles from the U.S. to Europe for only 50,000 miles each way. This can be a significant savings on the same flight using Delta SkyMiles. Virgin Atlantic is a 1:1 transfer partner of American Express Membership Rewards.
What will you do with your points?
American Express Membership Rewards points have many uses. Options include booking flights, redeeming for gift cards or transferring them to 22 airline and hotel partners. In addition to the examples above, American Express transfer partners include Qantas, Cathay Pacific and Etihad.
Plus, if you need to book a room for your vacation, points also transfer to Hilton, Marriott and Choice Hotels. Transferring points to partner airlines and hotels usually provide the greatest value when booking international and premium travel.
Occasional transfer bonuses from American Express to its partners provide even more value to the points you've earned.
The bottom line
Earning a welcome bonus from The Business Platinum Card® from American Express gives you many travel options. Even if American Express doesn't transfer to your preferred airline, there's a good chance that you can transfer to one of its alliance partners. Terms apply.
Being creative with your Membership Rewards points by using alliance partners can save you points when booking your next vacation.
