How to Get the Most From the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Card

Whether you’re planning domestic travel or an international excursion, having a reserve of Marriott Bonvoy points can help you save money on hotel stays. Marriott has 30 brands and more than 7,800 hotels around the world, which means you have lots of choices when the time comes to redeem points for award stays. Plus, Marriott has an eight-category award chart, so you can use points to match your travel style, whether it’s using as few as 7,500 points per night at a lower category hotel or splurging at a top-tier luxury resort.

The Marriott Bonvoy Boundless™ Credit Card can be a good choice for travelers who plan to stay at Marriott properties. In addition to the valuable welcome bonus, cardmembers enjoy perks that can enhance your Marriott stays and reward you for your spending. Here’s how to get the most from the card.

Earn the welcome bonus

The welcome bonus is the most appealing perk of the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless™ Credit CardEarn 5 Free Nights after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening.

NerdWallet values Marriott Bonvoy points at 0.9 cent apiece. You might get more or less value from Bonvoy points, depending on how you use them. For example, that bonus is more than enough for one off-peak award night at a Category 8 hotel like the Ritz-Carlton New York, Central Park. Or you can stretch your points and stay four nights at the Category 4 Renaissance Newport Beach Hotel.

Those are just examples, and there’s no obligation to spend all of your welcome bonus points in one place. You can continue to accumulate rewards and to save up for an even more valuable award booking in the future.

Get rewarded for everyday spending

With the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless™ Credit Card you’ll earn:

  • 6x Bonvoy points per $1 spent at participating hotels.

  • 2x Bonvoy points for every $1 spent on all other purchases.

Earning bonus points on everyday spending can help you accumulate points quickly, which will get you closer to your next award stay.

Take advantage of the free night award

With each yearly cardholder anniversary, you’ll receive a free night award (valued up to 35,000 points). This perk alone can offset the card’s $95 annual fee.

You can use Marriott’s award night search tool to easily filter hotels by the 35,000-point limit.

Achieve elite status

Marriott has five elite status levels: Silver, Gold, Platinum, Titanium and Ambassador. As a cardholder, you’ll automatically earn Silver Elite status. You’ll also earn 15 elite night credits each calendar year.

Depending on your travel habits, the 15-night boost could help you reach the next elite status tier. For example, Gold Elite status is earned after staying 25 nights in a year, and Platinum Elite status is earned after staying 50 nights in a year. As a cardholder, you could stay 35 nights and use the 15 elite night credits to earn Platinum Elite status, which means you’ll enjoy added perks like a 50% points bonus from stays, 4 p.m. priority late checkout and an in-hotel welcome gift of extra points.

But with this card, it’s possible to get to Gold without staying any nights at all. Spend $35,000 on purchases each account year and you’ll automatically achieve Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status, which means you’ll earn bonus points on stays and get late checkout and room upgrades when available. Reaching this elite status tier normally requires you to stay 25 nights per year, so earning the benefit with credit card spending could be a valuable benefit for anyone who can’t stay in hotels 25 nights a year. Keep in mind, you shouldn’t change your spending habits just to reach the threshold for this perk.

Save money with Chase Offers

As a cardholder, you can potentially save money on purchases you were already planning to make. Through Chase’s mobile app or website, you can access Chase Offers, which include limited-time discounts at participating restaurants and retailers.

Just click to add the offer to your card, note how many more days the offer is good for, then use the card to make a purchase with that merchant before the offer expires. The deals and participating merchants are constantly changing. For example, recent offers included $10 back on a membership purchase of $45 or more at Sam’s Club and 20% back on charges with Amazon Kindle eBooks. Taking advantage of a few of these offers can help offset the card’s annual fee.

The bottom line

The first box you’ll want to check as a Marriott Bonvoy Boundless™ Credit Card holder is earning the welcome bonus by meeting the minimum spend. Then, take advantage of the card’s rewards structure to earn 2x points on everyday purchases. Cardholders can also offset the card’s annual fee by taking advantage of the free night award at any property where an award night costs 35,000 Bonvoy points or less.
