Southwest already offers all passengers two free checked bags, so you don’t need one of their credit cards to save on baggage fees. However, having the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card will get you baggage protection, including lost luggage reimbursement and baggage delay insurance.

Here’s what new cardholders should do once their Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card arrives:

1. Make a plan to meet your minimum spending requirement

The welcome bonus with the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card is one of the biggest draws of the card. You can use these valuable points to travel to fantastic destinations, including Hawaii.

So once you receive your card, it’s a good idea to have a plan to meet the minimum spending requirement. You have a few months to do so, but the sooner you get it out of the way the quicker you’ll see those sign-up bonus points in your Rapid Rewards account.

While we don’t recommend changing your spending habits just to earn a sign-up bonus, it’s a good idea to start charging all your daily and recurring business expenses to your card, including telephone and internet bills, vendor payments, insurance premiums, office supplies and so on.

Keep in mind that the clock to reach your minimum spending requirement starts ticking once you receive approval for the card.

2. Pay for Southwest purchases to earn bonus points

Purchasing Southwest airfare with the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card will earn you 2x points. Whether you’re booking flights for yourself or your employees, consider paying with your card to boost your points balance.

3. Add employee cards for no cost

Many business owners choose to designate employees as authorized users on their accounts. Besides making it easier to track company spending, employees who spend with an authorized user card earn points for the business owner with every transaction.

4. Assess if the Companion Pass is worth chasing

If you frequently travel with a partner, the Southwest Companion Pass is one of the best travel deals. (My wife and I have used the Companion Pass for five consecutive years, and it’s saved us more than $10,000 in airfare.)

After recent changes, you now have to earn 125,000 Rapid Rewards points in a calendar year to earn this amazing perk. Once you do, you’ll essentially get two-for-one flights for the rest of the year in which you qualified and the following calendar year (just pay taxes and fees).

The welcome bonus and points you earn from purchases with the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card can give you a head start toward earning the Companion Pass. If you’re a Southwest loyalist, you could earn the balance of necessary points by flying Southwest. On the other hand, if you only fly Southwest periodically, it’ll likely be more challenging to meet the requirement.

5. Plan travel with your points

Earning a new cardmember sign-up bonus is exciting, but redeeming the points to get nearly free flights is even better.

While you’re working on the minimum spending requirement, research the 100+ Southwest destinations you can travel to, including family-friendly hotspots like the Bahamas, Costa Rica and Hawaii.

You can use points in your Rapid Rewards account to book flights for yourself and others. If you’re planning a summer trip, it’s not too early to start researching award flight options.

6.  Link your card to a dining rewards program

Adding your new card to an airline or hotel dining rewards program can earn you bonus miles or points every time you eat out at a participating restaurant.

Southwest has its own dining program, but you can also choose to register your card with another airline or hotel’s dining program.

7.   Refer-a-Friend to the card to earn 10,000 bonus points

Each year, you can earn up to 50,000 bonus points through referrals. Just send fellow business owners your unique referral link through Chase’s Refer-A-Friend program, and you’ll earn 10,000 bonus points once the referred application is approved.

Note that your referrals can choose any Southwest card — personal or business — and it doesn’t have to be the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card for you to earn a bonus.
