The Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPEN: Pitfalls and possibilities

The Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPEN is great for frequent business travelers, but for others, it might require more consideration.

High annual fee

The Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPEN’s annual fee is $450, a hefty sum to many. But as with any annual-fee card, if you spend enough and take advantage of its additional perks and travel-related credits, the yearly cost may not be so daunting. If you consider the card’s base points earnings potential — not factoring in travel credits — you’ll have to spend at least $45,000 a year on the card to balance out its fee with rewards.

Limited bonus categories

Beyond the industry standard 1 point per dollar on all purchases (and a boost to 1.5 points per dollar on purchases larger than $5,000), The Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPEN earns 5 points per dollar on flights and prepaid hotels booked through AmEx’s travel site. This represents a somewhat limited offering compared with other business cards that offer higher points yields on common categories like gas, office supplies, restaurants and utilities.

Limited acceptance

American Express cards are less widely accepted than Visa and Mastercard. For most people, this probably won’t drive the decision on whether to get The Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPEN as a business travel card, but if it’s important to you, plenty of alternatives are available.

A card known for its flexible high-percentage rewards, the Capital One® Spark® Cash for Business comes with Visa’s broad acceptance, among other appealing perks. Every dollar spent on this card rewards you with an unlimited 2% cash back, no matter the purchase category. For large and small businesses, that represents an simple way to earn cash back. Plus, the card comes with a sign-up bonus: Plus, a one-time $500 cash bonus once you spend $4,500 on purchases within 3 months from account opening.

The Capital One® Spark® Cash for Business has an annual fee of $0 for the first year, then $59. Lower yearly costs make this business card an affordable competitor to The Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPEN.

Is The Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPEN right for you?

For frequent business travelers who value comfort and efficiency, The Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPEN is a strong contender. If you’d rather avoid a large upfront annual fee and seek more flexible points earning options, other cards may better suit your needs.
