Debt Relief Pros Inc., also known as Student Debt Relief, refunded more than $30,000 to clients in Washington state after the attorney general alleged that the company overcharged consumers there and collected unlawful fees.
The company also agreed to refund consumers in Oregon after that state’s attorney general accused the company of violating consumer protection and debt resolution laws.
Enforcement actions: The company issued refunds in Washington to 78 people.
A 2015 assurance of voluntary compliance in Oregon required Student Debt Relief and its owner, Christopher Wordell, to pay about $14,000 to help refund 22 consumers. The document filed in Marion County Circuit Court did not amount to an admission of violation of law on the part of Wordell and his companies.
The Oregon settlement banned the companies from performing debt management services in the state. In Washington, the companies agreed to obey debt-adjustment laws and not to engage in deceptive advertising or misleading business practices.
