Everyone knows about Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving when retailers all over hold massive sales to kick-start the holiday shopping season. These days many retailers are getting a jump on Black Friday with special pre-Black Friday sales, a way of attracting consumer and media attention with deals leading up to the big day itself. In other words, it’s a way to encourage excitement about huge sales by promoting other sales. Enough retailers are getting in on the action that it’s led some consumer sites to start calling this period, “Black November.” So what’s looking good this year in terms of pre-Black Friday sales?

The online retailing giant is fueling its holiday shopping season extravaganza in a major way this year. The site is offering a Countdown to Black Friday Deals week, which includes both regular sale items and “lightning” deals. Some of those “lightning” deals will last until they sell out; others will only be available until the online countdown clock expires. Deals are scheduled throughout each day leading up to Black Friday.

So far Amazon has released teasers about some of the deals. It’s expectedly heavy on the electronics, but recent deals have also included the 1558 XL base height-adjustable portable basketball system from Lifetime for a sale price of $199 – regularly priced at $289.99.  Another of the “lightning” daily deals was of the definitively more mundane variety – a 60-roll package of Kleenex Cottonelle toilet paper was on sale for $39.99 for just a few hours on Nov. 8.  Other daily deals have included a garbage disposal and a Panasonic DMC-G5KK 16 MP compact-system digital camera with zoom lens and three-inch LCD screen for $299.99, a 57% discount.

To avoid missing out on any of these temporary, limited-time-only sales, consumers can sign up for the Amazon daily deals email alerts.

Home Depot

Home improvement haven Home Depot is working the pre-Black Friday sales season actively this year, with more than 50 brand-name appliances on significant markdown from November 10 to November 13. If you’ve been in the market for a new refrigerator or washing machine, this is a good time to make the purchase.

The company hasn’t released its full Black Friday ad as of November 8, but some of the anticipated deals include a Samsung 31.7 cubic-foot stainless steel, four-door refrigerator for $2,878, down from $3,999. Samsung’s 5.9 cubic-foot stainless steel, electric convection range oven, which normally retails for $999, will be going for $698.

These deals won’t necessarily be the most exciting of purchases and probably won’t help you get an early start on your Christmas shopping list – unless you plan on giving your loved one a new dishwasher – but the sales are definitely going to be a good opportunity to get a great deal on some necessary appliances.

The world’s biggest retailer always pulls out all the stops when it comes to Black Friday and this year’s no different. Since the start of the month, the company has been promoting its “early bird online specials.” This year’s sales are leaning heavily on tablets, cell phones and cell phone accessories, but there are also plenty of televisions, toaster ovens and other such items.

The hottest deals include an iPod Touch 4th generation with accessory kit for $199 and a Nextbook 7-inch tablet for $69 while supplies last. Another item expected to be popular is an HP 14-inch laptop for $299. Four-packs of children’s polo shirts have been one of the bigger sellers during the early Black Friday sales period, according to Walmart’s website.  The company is promoting the Sceptre 32-inch LED HDTV for $179, while the 50-inch model is on sale for $399, normally retailing for about $500.

Think twice about getting up early and battling the crowds on Black Friday this year. With so many deals available throughout the month, you may just wrap up your holiday shopping well before the 29th.
