It used to be that Thanksgiving was all about family, football and food. (Or is it food, football and family?)

Either way, aficionados have long pumped the iconic American holiday high on its November pedestal — all of the fun and none of the high expectations. No gifts, thank-you tips or engagement rings necessary. Just show up with loose pants and a willingness to pitch in with the dishes.

Many of the same people who embrace the day’s traditions are bemoaning Black Friday’s creep deep into the heart of Thanksgiving (7 a.m. store openings!). Social media feeds are full of protests against retailers opening on Thanksgiving and celebrations for those staying dark.
