What is a same-day business loan?

A same-day business loan gives you access to funds the day you’re approved, or within 24 hours.
What “same day” actually means
“Same day” isn’t uniform for every lender. Funding speed takes three things into account:
  • Decision speed. This is how long underwriting takes. Some lenders decide in minutes.
  • Cutoff time. Approval at 4 p.m. may mean you’re not actually getting funds until the next day.
  • Transfer method. Most lenders use standard ACH transfers, which can take one to three business days. In some cases, you may be able to opt for a faster method, like a wire transfer, for a fee.
Ask your lender about all three to determine just how quickly you’ll see the money in your account.

When to consider a same-day business loan

Consider one of these small-business loans if:
☑️ You need to cover emergency expenses.
☑️ You can’t meet the strict requirements for traditional loan options.
☑️ You want to take advantage of an immediate money-making opportunity.
Same-day and instant business loans are best for true urgency — not convenience. When considering this type of financing, make sure you have a clear purpose for the loan and a plan in place to pay it back.

Types of same-day business loans

Same-day business loans are available from online lenders. Unlike credit unions or banks, these companies tend to offer simple applications with minimal documentation required.
As a result of their speed and flexibility, however, same-day business loans usually have higher interest rates and shorter repayment terms than traditional loan options.
Common options for same-day business loans include:

Short-term loans

Best for: One-time, immediate expenses.
With short-term business loans, you receive an upfront lump sum of money that you repay over a set period, typically between three and 24 months. These loans can cover a variety of short-term needs, such as equipment repairs or inventory purchases.

Business lines of credit

Best for: Flexible, ongoing access to capital.
A business line of credit allows you to draw from a set amount of money, up to a certain limit. You only pay interest on the funds you use, and once you’ve repaid what you borrowed, you can draw on the line again. This makes it a good option for making payroll, buying inventory and covering emergency expenses.

Invoice factoring

Best for: Business-to-business companies with unpaid invoices.
With invoice factoring, you sell your unpaid invoices to a factoring company at a discount.
You receive a percentage of the invoice amount upfront, and the factoring company takes responsibility for collecting payment from your customers. Once the company collects payment, you receive the difference, minus the company’s fees.
Invoice factoring differs from a standard business loan. But it gives you cash right away, rather than waiting for customer payments.

Merchant cash advances

Best for: Businesses with steady card sales that can’t qualify for other options.
A merchant cash advance (MCA) gives you an upfront sum of cash that you repay using a percentage of your debit and credit card sales, plus a fee. MCAs have flexible qualifications and can fund extremely quickly.
You should consider all other financing options before turning to a merchant cash advance, however. MCAs are priced with factor rates rather than interest rates, and converting those costs into an APR can result in triple-digit rates. Daily or weekly repayments drawn from card sales can also create a cycle of debt that’s difficult to break.

How to compare same-day business loans

Same-day business loans can be expensive, so it’s important to review multiple loan offers to find the most affordable option. You should compare factors such as:
  • Funding speed. Confirm the processing speed and funding times with different lenders. You should also ask how the lender sends funds and whether timing depends on your bank.
  • Interest rate. You’ll often pay more for speed and convenience, so make sure you understand how much a same-day loan will cost. Although lenders may charge interest differently, it’s helpful to convert these costs into an annual percentage rate (APR). An APR shows the total cost of the loan and makes it easier to compare options directly.
  • Additional fees. Be on the lookout for additional fees a lender may charge, such as origination fees, underwriting fees or prepayment penalties. You’ll want to make sure you consider these fees in the total cost of your loan.
  • Collateral requirements. Same-day lenders don’t always require physical collateral — like equipment, inventory or real estate — but offering it could help you qualify for better rates and terms.
  • Repayment schedule. Some same-day business loans require daily or weekly payments. These frequent payments can impact your cash flow.
  • Loan term. Many same-day business loans have shorter repayment terms. Make sure you understand your term length options — and how a term affects your payment amount. If you want to repay your loan over a longer period, you may want to explore other funding choices.

How to get a same-day business loan

If speed is a priority in your search for financing, here are steps you can take to find the right same-day business loan.

Step 1. Decide how quickly you need funds

Some business needs — such as a burst pipe — may require immediate funding. But you may be able to wait a few days or weeks for other expenses.
If you don’t truly need funding today (and you can qualify), consider a lower-cost option, like an SBA Express loan, that has expedited, but not immediate, funding times.

Step 2. Check your credit score

The stronger your personal credit history, the easier it will typically be to receive fast financing. If you don’t know your score, you can get it for free from NerdWallet.
Same-day business loans for bad credit are available, but fast funding and a weaker credit profile often come with higher costs.

Step 3. Confirm you meet lender requirements

Although online lenders typically have flexible qualification requirements, they’ll usually look at your time in business and annual revenue — in addition to your personal credit score. Lenders may also consider your cash flow and sales projections.
Review this information ahead of time so you have a sense of where you stand before you begin your loan search.

Step 4. Shop and compare multiple offers

Research and compare multiple lenders to decide which offers the best deal for your business needs. In addition to funding speed, consider factors such as repayment terms, interest rates, loan fees and lender reputation.
🤓
Nerdy Tip
Online marketplaces, like NerdWallet Small Business, let you compare multiple offers at once (even same-day funding).

Step 5. Prepare your application documents

Many online lenders allow you to connect your financial accounts to their system to expedite the underwriting process. You may also need to provide:
  • Basic information about you and your business.
  • Personal and business bank statements.
  • Personal and business tax returns.
  • Business financial statements.
❗Keep in mind that a lender may advertise same-day business loans, but that’s not always a guarantee. Make sure your application includes everything the lender asks for to avoid delays — and watch for any fine print.
For example, Bluevine deposits approved line of credit draws instantly into a Bluevine business checking account. To get funds that fast with an outside bank account, you’ll pay $15 for a wire transfer, which can arrive in as little as a few hours. Bluevine’s free ACH option typically lands the next business day, but can take up to three.
Timing also matters. OnDeck, for example, funds term loans the same day if you complete checkout Monday through Friday before 10:30 a.m. ET — with funds typically arriving by 5 p.m. local time. If you miss the cutoff, you won’t qualify for same-day funding and you’ll get your funds within three days.

Pros and cons of same-day business loans

Pros

  • Quick access to funds; can be used to cover immediate expenses.
  • Streamlined application processes, typically with minimal documentation required.
  • Lenders usually have flexible eligibility requirements. For example, startups or borrowers with bad credit may qualify.

Cons

  • Can be expensive; higher interest rates than traditional loan options.
  • Tend to have shorter repayment terms, which typically means higher payment amounts.
  • May require frequent payments (daily or weekly) that can be difficult to manage.

Alternatives to same-day business loans

If you can wait longer to get capital, you may find financing options with lower interest rates than same-day business loans. You may also find other types of funding that are better suited for your needs. Here are some alternatives to consider:
  • If you want the lowest rates. Banks can offer a wide range of business loan options — and typically offer the most competitive interest rates and repayment terms. You’ll need to meet strict requirements to qualify, however, and funding can be slow.
  • If you can’t qualify for a bank loan. SBA loans offer low interest rates and long repayment terms. Although it may be slightly easier to qualify for an SBA loan than a bank loan, you’ll still need to meet fairly strong credentials to qualify. Standard SBA 7(a) loans can take 30 to 90 days to fund, but SBA Express loans can offer faster funding timelines.
  • If you need to cover daily expenses. If you have a personal credit score of 690 or above, you may qualify for near-instant approval on a business credit card. Business credit cards can be a quick and affordable option for everyday funding — as long as you pay your bill on time and don’t carry a balance.
  • If you want to avoid debt. Small-business grants offer free funding that doesn’t need to be repaid. Grants are available from federal and state agencies, as well as private companies. Applications are time-consuming and competitive, but can be worth it if you can access free capital.
